Atlantean Brute 02
Atlantean Brute 02 — The Encounter
Drowned shock-trooper of sunken Atlantis, crab-mounted and twin-bladed · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Atlantean Brute 02
When the sea swallowed Atlantis, not all its soldiers drowned cleanly. The deep changed them. The brute was once a guardsman of the inner ring, and the cold dark filled his lungs and never left; now he breathes the abyss as easily as air. He fights bonded to an abyssal crab raised from a hatchling in the flooded barracks, the two moving as one armored thing. His twin blades are grown, not forged, from black coral cut along the trench walls and honed against shipwreck iron. Atlanteans of his rank never charged alone; they came in surging ranks, each warrior covering the next as a wave covers the wave before it, and so they fight still. He remembers the towers and the lamps and the betrayal that opened the gates, and he hates everything that walks dry. Sailors who hear the grind of crab-claws on a hull seldom live to name the sound.
Run Atlantean Brute 02 in Sixty Seconds
- It never fights alone. Tidal Surge adds 2d6 to every hit while an ally or its crab is within 10 ft. Keep it clustered; that is the whole design.
- Open with Crashing Charge. Slam the front-liner for 6d6 and knock them prone, then Multiattack the prone target with advantage next turn.
- Kill-priority: the casters. Once the line breaks, it bee-lines squishies and uses Undertow to grapple-drag a striker out of formation.
- When bloodied, it stops retreating. It plants beside the crab for the +2 AC and the Tidal Surge bonus and trades blows to the end.
- Three ways to run it: raid skirmisher in a flooded dungeon, mounted shock-trooper in an Atlantean warband, or a lone trench guardian ambushing a beached ship.
Atlantean Brute 02
Large humanoid (aquatic), neutral evil
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEAmphibious. The brute can breathe air and water.
Tidal Surge. Signature. While within 10 feet of an ally or its bonded crab-mount, the brute deals an extra 7 (2d6) damage with each weapon hit. The drowned warriors of Atlantis fight in crashing, overlapping waves and never alone.
Actions
Multiattack. The brute makes two attacks with its twin coral blades.
Coral Blade. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) slashing damage. If the target is a Medium or smaller creature, it must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be pushed 10 feet away.
Crashing Charge (Recharge 5-6). The brute moves up to its speed in a straight line and slams a target with its full weight. The target must make a DC 14 Strength saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) bludgeoning damage and being knocked prone on a failure, or half damage on a success.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Undertow (Reaction). When a creature within 5 feet hits the brute with a melee attack, the brute may grapple that creature (escape DC 15) as it drags the attacker into the current.
A hulking drowned warrior of sunken Atlantis rides a chitin-plated abyssal crab, twin serrated coral blades raised mid-swing, barnacled harness streaming brine.
Atlantean Brute 02, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEShellguard (signature). While the crab is within 5 feet of its bonded rider, the rider gains a +2 bonus to AC from the overlapping carapace.
Actions
Crushing Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d8+3) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 14) if it is Large or smaller.
Reactions
Pincer Snap. When a creature grappled by the crab attempts to escape, the crab may deal 7 (2d6) bludgeoning damage to it as the claw tightens.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with Crashing Charge into the densest pair of PCs to knock one prone, then carve with the blades. Keep it adjacent to any ally so Tidal Surge keeps adding damage. Pair it with a caster or a bigger sea-horror; it is muscle, not a duelist.
Lead with Crashing Charge to flatten the front-liner, then Multiattack the prone target for advantage. Kill-priority is squishy casters once it reaches them. Use Undertow to grapple and drag the party's striker away from their healer, and fight clustered with minions so Tidal Surge stays online.
Run it as the bruiser anchor of an Atlantean warband, not alone. Charge to break the line, grapple-and-drag with Undertow to split the party, and let the bonded crab pin a second target. Pair it with a bigger threat (a drowned warlord or sea-spirit) so a high-level party cannot simply out-action it.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Atlantean Brute 02?
Its home statline is CR 6 (2,300 XP), a Tier 2 (levels 5-10) bruiser. Scaled versions are provided for Tier 1 (around CR 2) and Tier 3 (around CR 11) in the tiers table.
Can Atlantean Brute 02 be a companion or ally?
Yes. Reskinned as a drowned mercenary it can fight beside a sea-themed party, but its bonded Abyssal Crab is the ready-made companion: AC 16, HP 76, a grappling Crushing Claw, and Shellguard that hardens its rider's armor. Use the companion block as a player or NPC ally.
Is it a solo boss?
No. It is an add-on brute with no legendary actions; a four-PC party will out-act it one-on-one. Field it clustered with minions or a bonded crab so Tidal Surge stays active, and pair it with a larger flagship threat.
