Slain by a hundred heroes and reborn from the peat, a war-host rises out of the Caledonian dark with one heartbeat and one grievance. Nine boar-kin march in this First Rising, each risen remembering how it died, and hungry to return the favor.
The peat has given back its host. Deeper sleepers stir, and giants wait in the bog. This is only the beginning of the horde.
The last king of the low country did not tithe the Huntress. She sent him the First Tusk, a god-beast the size of a war-cart, and a hundred heroes hunted it across the moor for nine days. On the ninth they killed it. And then, over its hide, they killed each other.
Nine days of a god-beast's blood soaked into a ground that forgets nothing. Where the great boar fell, the bog began to give up a host, boar-shaped men and man-shaped boars, each carrying a splinter of the First Tusk's death and every ounce of its wrath. They rose remembering the spears. Now they hunt.
