Ugat
vine-lashing wrangler of the walking grove
Ugat — The Encounter
vine-lashing wrangler of the walking grove · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Ugat
Ugat is the grove's wrangler, the one whose right arm has lengthened over slow centuries into a barbed vine-whip. Where the brutes wait, Ugat reaches out and hauls the foe in—snapping a fleeing scout off its feet, dragging a stubborn knight into Amelia's slamming reach. Its name means root, for it would tether the whole world if it could. It is not a champion and cannot win a fight by itself; its whole craft is delivering enemies into the rest of the warband. Loggers who feel a coil snatch their ankle from twelve feet away know the walking grove has decided where they will stand.
Run Ugat in Sixty Seconds
- Hook the backline then lash a caster or fleeing foe at 15 ft. and drag them into the brutes' reach.
- Punish lingerers then use Reaching Lash as a reaction on anyone ending their turn within 15 ft.
- Set up, don't solo then deliver prey to the pack rather than trading blows alone.
- Lash plus claw then a full turn deals ~13 damage and a 10-ft. forced drag.
Ugat
Medium plant, neutral
CR 2 · 450 XP · GUIDELINEReaching Lash. Ugat's whip-vine arm has long reach. When a creature it can see ends its turn within 15 feet, Ugat can use its reaction to make one Vine Lash attack against it.
Flammable. Ugat is vulnerable to fire damage while not in contact with living soil.
Actions
Multiattack. Ugat makes one Vine Lash attack and one Raking Claw attack.
Vine Lash. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8+3) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 12 Strength save or be pulled up to 10 feet toward Ugat.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open by lashing a fleeing or backline foe at 15 ft. and dragging it toward the brutes, then claw. Use the reaction lash on anyone ending their turn close. Ugat sets up kills for the grove—when bloodied, pull back behind Amelia and keep yanking targets into the pack.
Run Ugat as the warband's hook: reel skirmishers and casters into the kill zone the brutes hold, lashing reactions on anyone who lingers in reach. It never operates alone—it delivers prey to the pack.
Use Ugat to control the battlefield for the whole grove, always part of the line. Drag priority targets to the brutes turn after turn; keep the warband spread so fire can't sweep lasher and anchors together.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Ugat?
Ugat is CR 2 (450 XP) at its native Tier 1. Lift its AC, HP, to-hit, and save DC into the Tier 2 or Tier 3 bands for stronger parties; its vine lash and traits stay the same.
How does Ugat fight alongside the rest of the Afams?
Ugat is the warband's hook. It lashes enemies at 15 ft. and drags them into the brutes' reach and Amelia's slams, then punishes lingerers with a reaction lash. It controls position for the pack and never duels alone.
Does the Vine Lash pull always work?
Only if the target fails a DC 12 Strength save (scaling to 14 or 16 at higher tiers). On a fail it is dragged up to 10 ft. toward Ugat—ideally into the rest of the grove.
