Mosswhisper
mushroom-staff spore-fae who fogs the wood with sleep
Mosswhisper — The Encounter
mushroom-staff spore-fae who fogs the wood with sleep · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Mosswhisper
Mosswhisper drifts behind the flight of the Ahlir Faiser, the forest fae who let the wood itself do their killing. Its red-capped staff sheds a fine spore that settles on tongue and eyelid; intruders find their swings going wide and their thoughts going soft. The masked one rarely strikes the killing blow, content to thicken the air until the melee fae can simply walk up to a swaying foe. Woodsmen who wake from a sudden drowse in the deep groves count themselves lucky, for most who breathe Mosswhisper's fog do not wake at all. It hunts only with the warband.
Run Mosswhisper in Sixty Seconds
- Drift close then keep the Spore-Staff aura on the enemy front to impose disadvantage.
- Lash with poison then use Spore-Lash at 10 ft. so melee can't easily reach it.
- Cloud the cluster then save Drowsing Cloud for bunched or wounded foes to slow or sleep them.
- When bloodied then retreat into the warband and keep fogging the field.
Mosswhisper
Medium fey, neutral
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINESpore-Staff (signature). Mosswhisper's red-capped staff trails drowsy spores. When a creature starts its turn within 5 ft. of Mosswhisper, it must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution save or have disadvantage on attack rolls until the start of its next turn.
Fungal Resilience. Mosswhisper has advantage on saving throws against poison and being put to sleep by magic.
Actions
Multiattack. Mosswhisper makes two Spore-Lash attacks.
Spore-Lash. Melee Spell Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d8+3) bludgeoning damage plus 5 (2d4) poison damage.
Drowsing Cloud (Recharge 5-6). Mosswhisper bursts a spore-cloud in a 15-foot radius within 60 ft. Each creature there must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution save or be poisoned and have its speed halved until the end of its next turn. A creature that has 30 hit points or fewer when it fails falls unconscious for 1 minute instead, waking if it takes damage or another creature uses an action to shake it awake.
A masked fae whose mushroom-staff fogs the air with spores that dull blades and close eyes.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Keep Mosswhisper near the melee fae so its Spore-Staff aura dulls anyone who closes, and lash with reach. Hold Drowsing Cloud for a clustered, low-HP foe. It is a controller, not a front-liner.
Open by drifting toward the enemy line so the spore aura imposes disadvantage, then lash with poison at 10 ft. Drop Drowsing Cloud on bunched casters or wounded foes to slow or sleep them for the flight to mop up. When bloodied, fall back into the warband; Mosswhisper controls space, it does not solo.
Same control loop at higher numbers: aura up, lash, cloud, repeat. Position behind two or more melee fae who exploit the disadvantaged, slowed targets. It is an elite controller, never a boss.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Mosswhisper?
Mosswhisper is CR 6 at its native Tier 2 (about 102 HP, +6 to hit, DC 14). Scale with the tier table to CR 2 or CR 11.
How does Mosswhisper fight alongside the rest of the Ahlir Faiser?
It is the flight's controller. Mosswhisper's spore aura blunts attackers and its Drowsing Cloud slows or sleeps clusters so the melee fae finish helpless targets.
Is Mosswhisper solo-capable?
No. It is a control elite with no legendary actions and modest damage. Run it inside an Ahlir Faiser warband.
