Verdantwhisper
red-eyed beast-totem fae who hexes from beneath the hood
Verdantwhisper — The Encounter
red-eyed beast-totem fae who hexes from beneath the hood · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Verdantwhisper
Verdantwhisper carries the small beast-totem of the Ahlir Faiser, the forest fae whose patience runs out the moment a stranger lifts an axe. Its single red eye marks where the curse will fall, and the masked casters of the flight strike wherever its hex has softened the ground. Trespassers describe a creeping cold that follows the fae's whisper, a sickness in the limbs that worsens with every breath spent in the grove. Verdantwhisper is no lord of the wood, but it is the voice that tells the warband whom to break next, and it is never short of company.
Run Verdantwhisper in Sixty Seconds
- Hex first then open with Witherbolt to give allies advantage and impose save disadvantage.
- Feed the strikers then let the melee fae hit the hexed target while the window is open.
- Break the anchor then save Withering Word to frighten the party's toughest body.
- When bloodied then fall back behind allies and keep the hex flowing.
Verdantwhisper
Medium fey, neutral
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEBeast-Totem Hex (signature). When Verdantwhisper hits a creature with Witherbolt, that target has disadvantage on the next saving throw it makes before the start of Verdantwhisper's next turn, and any Ahlir Faiser ally has advantage to hit it during that time.
Baleful Gaze. Verdantwhisper's red eye unsettles the weak-willed; it has advantage on Charisma checks made to frighten and on saves against being frightened.
Actions
Multiattack. Verdantwhisper casts Witherbolt twice.
Witherbolt. Ranged Spell Attack: +6 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d10+3) necrotic damage.
Withering Word (Recharge 5-6). Verdantwhisper utters a curse at one creature within 60 ft. The target must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom save or take 14 (4d6) necrotic damage and be frightened of Verdantwhisper until the end of its next turn (half damage and not frightened on a success).
A red-eyed fae who clutches a beast-headed totem and curses intruders to wither where they stand.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Use Verdantwhisper as a debuffer: hex the front-runner with Witherbolt so an ally lands a clean blow, and save Withering Word to frighten the party's anchor. Keep it at range and behind cover.
Open with Witherbolt to set Beast-Totem Hex on the toughest foe, then let the melee fae pile in with advantage while it stacks disadvantage on saves. Drop Withering Word on a wounded target to frighten and finish. When bloodied, retreat behind allies and keep hexing; Verdantwhisper fights as part of the flight, never solo.
Run it as the warband's curse-engine: hex, blast, frighten, repeat. Pair with two or more strikers so the disadvantage from its hex translates into broken saves and crit chances. It is an elite, not a boss.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Verdantwhisper?
Verdantwhisper is CR 6 at its native Tier 2 (about 100 HP, +6 to hit, DC 14). Use the tier table for CR 2 or CR 11.
How does Verdantwhisper fight alongside the rest of the Ahlir Faiser?
It is the flight's curse-caller. Verdantwhisper hexes a target to grant allies advantage and strip its saves, then the melee fae break it. It frightens key foes with Withering Word.
Can Verdantwhisper run a fight on its own?
No. It is a debuff-focused elite with no legendary actions. Field it with other Ahlir Faiser to capitalize on its hexes.
