Armored Wild Boar — The Encounter

A boulder of muscle and bone-plate that charges like an avalanche · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Armored Wild Boar

Drovers of the war-tribes prize these brutes above any horse, for a wild boar grown to this size and armored in its own bone is worth a wall of spearmen. They are not tamed so much as aimed. A handler raises one from a piglet, feeds it the offal of slain enemies until it associates the scent of fear with food, and then points it at the foe. The bone-plate that sheathes its head and shoulders is no smith's work but a thing the beast grows, layer over layer, from the calcium of every bone it cracks. Hunters know better than to meet one head-on; the plated front shrugs off spears, so the trick is to step aside at the last instant and strike the unarmored flank as the avalanche thunders past. Those who misjudge the timing are gored, trampled, and rooted into the mud, and the boar simply turns and lines up its next run.

Goring Rush. If the boar moves at least 20 feet straight toward a target and hits it with a Tusk attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 14 (4d6) piercing damage and must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Relentless (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest). If the boar takes 15 damage or less that would reduce it to 0 hit points, it is reduced to 1 hit point instead and lets out a maddened squeal.

Bone-Plate Hide. Signature. The boar's overlapping bony plates make its front a moving wall. It has resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from any attack made against it from the front, but not from its flanks or rear.

Actions

Multiattack. The boar makes one Tusk attack and one Stomp attack.

Tusk. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d10+5) piercing damage.

Stomp. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one prone target. Hit: 18 (3d8+5) bludgeoning damage.

Bred or grown wild on a battlefield diet of carrion and iron, this monster of a boar wears a hide of fused bony plates like natural barding. It does not stalk; it picks a direction and becomes a landslide.

Battering Mount (signature). A rider on Armored Wild Boar adds the boar's Goring Rush prone effect to their own charge attacks when the boar moves at least 20 feet straight toward the target.

Actions

Companion Tusk. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) piercing damage.

Reactions

Shield Flank. When its rider is hit by a melee attack, Armored Wild Boar may interpose its plated bulk, reducing the damage by 1d10.

A boar raised to bond, Armored Wild Boar bears its handler into the fray as a living battering ram and shield.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP7d10+21 (59) To-hit+6Save DC13

Open with a Goring Rush across open ground to floor the front-liner, then Stomp the prone target. Steer the party to its flank; it's nearly unkillable from the front. Best as a mount or beside its handler.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC15HP12d10+48 (114) To-hit+8Save DC15

Charge the heaviest armor with Goring Rush to knock prone, then Stomp for big damage. Bone-Plate Hide means the party must circle to its flank to hurt it. Relentless buys it one extra turn; pair it with a rider or pack rather than running it alone.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC17HP18d10+72 (171) To-hit+9Save DC17

Line up Goring Rush on a back-line target, trample through, and Stomp the prone. Keep its plated front toward the party. It is a beast, not a boss; run it as cavalry beside a warlord or in a stampeding pack.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Armored Wild Boar?

Its native sheet is CR 5 (Tier 2): AC 15, 114 HP, +8 to hit, save DC 15. Tier 1 and Tier 3 versions are provided with the same traits and scaled numbers.

Can Armored Wild Boar be a companion or ally?

Yes. As Tuskbreaker it serves as a powerful war-mount, turning its rider's charge into a prone-flooring battering ram and shielding them from melee blows.

Is this a solo boss?

No. It is a beast with no legendary kit and is easily out-maneuvered by four players who flank its unarmored sides. Use it as cavalry, a pack animal, or a charging hazard.
