Barubal — The Encounter

bat-winged lasher with a long barbed tail · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Barubal

Barubal's degraded blood gave him a long serpentine tail tipped with a venomed barb, and he has made it the cruelest tool in the warband. He was sired in the old watcher-lord's defiance and inherited a hunter's patience for the kill. In the host he is the snatcher, lashing out from the second rank to hook an enemy's vulnerable backline and haul it into the heart of the flight, where his kin tear it apart. His venom slows and weakens whatever he stings, softening even the strongest foe. He never wades in alone; he positions behind the brutes, picks off the prey his kin cannot reach, and reels the broken in. Where his tail strikes, the enemy formation loses a piece.

Barbed Tail (Signature). Barubal's tail has 15-foot reach. When he hits a Large or smaller creature with his Stinger, he can grapple it (escape DC 15). While grappling, he can drag the creature with him when he flies.

Venom of the Fall. A creature that fails the save against Barubal's Stinger is poisoned until the end of its next turn; while poisoned this way it takes 5 (2d4) poison damage at the start of its turn.

Actions

Multiattack. Barubal makes one Claw attack and one Stinger attack.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) slashing damage.

Stinger. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution save or be poisoned (see Venom of the Fall).

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Yank. When Barubal hits a creature with his Stinger, he can pull that creature up to 10 feet toward him.

His tail reaches where his claws cannot, hooking a foe from the rear rank and dragging it screaming into the waiting flock.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC13HP44 (7d8+13) To-hit+4Save DC12

Use Barubal as the snatcher of a small fallen band. Strike the enemy backline with his 15-ft. stinger, Yank a fragile caster forward, and let his kin finish it. Keep him behind heavier Watchers, picking off isolated prey.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP110 (13d8+52) To-hit+7Save DC15

His native tier; run him as the flight's grappler. Each turn sting a backline target, Yank or grapple it, and drag it into the brood. Venom of the Fall softens tough foes while kin converge. He works the second rank, never the front.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP180 (24d8+96) To-hit+9Save DC16

Field him in a larger warband as the puller. He hooks the enemy's healer or commander from range, drags it into the killing center, and poisons it for the flock to destroy. He is a support striker who fights behind the line, never alone.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Barubal?

Barubal is CR 6 (2,300 XP) at his native Tier 2, with Tier 1 (~CR 2) and Tier 3 (~CR 11) lines so he can snatch for weaker or stronger Fallen Watcher flights.

How does Barubal fight alongside the rest of the Fallen Watchers?

He is the warband's snatcher. From the second rank his barbed tail hooks the enemy's exposed backline, poisons it, and drags it into the heart of the flight where his kin tear it apart.

Can Barubal carry a fight alone?

No. He has no legendary actions and his whole role is pulling isolated prey into the flock, which requires kin to capitalize, so he fights as part of the warband.
