Marrock — The Encounter

horned watcher-lord crowned in broken oaths · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Marrock

In the elder reckonings, Marrock stood among the Watchers appointed to guard the firstborn of men and to teach them only what the heavens permitted. He broke that trust, taking mortal women and siring a brood whose blood ran ever more degraded with each generation. The Fallen Watchers gather to him because his is the oldest sin, and the broken seals and shattered idols heaped at his feet are trophies of every oath he has cast down. He fights as their crowned anchor, never alone for long: lesser kin wheel around him while he wades through ranks, and so long as one of his children stands near, the host fears nothing. He cannot ascend, so he drags everything down with him.

Magic Resistance. Marrock has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Dread Aegis (Signature). While Marrock has at least one Fallen Watcher within 30 feet of him, both he and that ally have advantage on saving throws against being frightened, and the first 10 damage each takes per turn is reduced to 0.

Wings of the Watch. Marrock does not provoke opportunity attacks when he flies out of an enemy's reach.

Actions

Multiattack. Marrock makes two Rending Claw attacks and one Hooked Talon attack.

Rending Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (3d6+6) slashing damage.

Hooked Talon. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8+6) piercing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 17) if it is Large or smaller.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Oathbreaker's Recoil. When a creature Marrock can see within 30 feet drops to 0 hit points, Marrock regains 10 hit points.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Claw. Marrock makes one Rending Claw attack.

Sweep of Wings (Costs 2 Actions). Each creature within 15 feet must succeed on a DC 17 Strength save or be knocked prone and pushed 10 feet away.

Whisper of the Fall (Costs 2 Actions). Marrock targets one creature within 60 feet; it must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom save or be frightened of him until the end of its next turn.

He was set to watch, and instead he reached down. Now Marrock spreads ash-grey wings over the warband he sired in defiance of his old charge.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP55 (10d8+10) To-hit+4Save DC13

Run Marrock as the lone heavy of a small fallen patrol. Open with Hooked Talon to grapple the squishiest target, then keep one weaker kinsman beside him for Dread Aegis. He fights as the wall the warband forms behind, not a duelist.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP130 (15d10+45) To-hit+7Save DC14

Lead a flight of three to five Fallen Watchers. Marrock anchors the center so his aura covers them, claws the front line, and uses Sweep of Wings when foes bunch up. Let the lighter kin flank while he holds the prize grapple.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC18HP210 (20d10+100) To-hit+9Save DC16

His true tier and the warband's keystone. Keep at least one Fallen Watcher within 30 feet at all times for Dread Aegis. Multiattack the marked kill-priority, spend legendaries on Whisper of the Fall to scatter healers, and Oathbreaker's Recoil tops him back up every time the host downs someone.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Marrock?

Marrock is CR 11 (7,200 XP) at his native Tier 3. Scaled stat lines for Tier 1 (~CR 2) and Tier 2 (~CR 6) are provided so he can headline lower-level warbands.

How does Marrock fight alongside the rest of the Fallen Watchers?

He is their crowned anchor. Dread Aegis only works while kin stand near him, so he plants himself in the center of the flight, soaks damage, grapples priority targets, and lets the lighter Watchers wheel and flank around his protection.

Is Marrock meant to be fought solo?

He can carry a fight alone thanks to three legendary options and a punishing reaction, but he is strongest, and most thematic, surrounded by his brood so his aura and Oathbreaker's Recoil keep paying off.
