Goblin King in Throne — The Encounter

Bloated warren-king enthroned upon a hill of skulls · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Goblin King in Throne

Goblin kingship is not inherited; it is survived. This one clawed to the top of the skull-pile by being craftier, crueler, and far more patient than every rival it has since had eaten, and it rules from a throne built of the proof. Grown fat on tribute while the warren starves, it has not lifted its scepter in honest labor in years — why would it, when ten thousand goblins exist to die at the wave of a ringed hand? Its genius is entirely for command and self-preservation. It hoards loyal-enough cutters close, not for love but as living shields, and spends them without a flicker. In battle the king rarely leaves the throne-mound, content to bellow orders that send the warren surging while it sits half-armored and gloating. To reach it a hero must wade through the whole screaming horde — which is exactly the point. The king did not build the wall of bodies by accident. It is the wall.

Throne of Skulls. Signature. While the king sits or stands on his throne-mound, he gains half cover (+2 AC, already included) and his commands carry: as a bonus action he can order one allied goblinoid he can see within 60 feet to use its reaction to move up to its speed and make one attack. He can do this twice per round.

Tyrant's Presence. Each enemy that starts its turn within 15 feet of the king and can see him must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom save or be frightened until the start of its next turn.

Actions

Multiattack. The king makes two attacks with his spiked scepter.

Spiked Scepter. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d8+3) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength save or be knocked prone.

Bellowed Command (Recharge 5-6). The king roars an order. Each allied goblinoid within 60 feet that can hear him can immediately use its reaction to move up to its speed and make one weapon attack with advantage. Each enemy within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom save or be frightened of the king until the end of its next turn.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Cowardly Tyrant. When the king is hit by an attack, he can use his reaction to force an allied goblinoid within 5 feet to swap places with him and take the hit instead, if the ally is willing or coerced (which it always is).

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Scepter Strike. The king makes one Spiked Scepter attack.

Lash the Curs. The king orders an allied goblinoid within 60 feet to move up to its speed and make one weapon attack as a reaction.

Hurl Insult (Costs 2 Actions). The king picks one enemy he can see within 30 feet; that creature must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom save or be frightened of the king until the end of its next turn and have disadvantage on its next attack.

An obese, multi-horned goblin chieftain lounging on a throne of stacked skulls, a spiked scepter in one fist, flanked by two cringing servants who exist mainly to be thrown in harm's way.

Royal Shield (signature). While within 5 feet of the king, Goblin King in Throne can be forced to take hits in his place (see the king's Cowardly Tyrant) and has advantage on saves against being frightened.

Actions

Jagged Spear. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d10+4) piercing damage.

Reactions

Interpose. When an attack would hit the king, Goblin King in Throne can move up to 5 feet and take the attack instead.

A favored bodyguard who has learned that the safest place near the king is also the most likely to die for him.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+24 (60) To-hit+5Save DC13

Run him as a deadly chieftain mini-boss. Open with Bellowed Command to swarm the party, then sit on the throne lashing minions. If a PC closes, shove prone and let goblins pile on. He can solo a low-level party briefly thanks to legendary actions, but plays best with a few cutters as shields.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC15HP12d8+60 (114) To-hit+6Save DC14

His home tier as a solo-capable boss (band-dropped for the legendary kit). Open with Bellowed Command + Tyrant's Presence to fear and swarm. Use Cowardly Tyrant and Snik to dodge focus-fire, legendary Scepter Strikes between turns. Add a handful of goblins for shields and the fight sings.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d8+120 (210) To-hit+9Save DC17

Field him as an overlord boss with a full warren. Fear the party, command waves of minions, and trade legendary strikes each round. Even here, ring him with cutters; his whole design is to fight from behind a wall of bodies.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Goblin King in Throne?

His native, solo-capable build is CR 5 (1,800 XP) — a Tier 2 boss whose legendary kit lets him play up against a full party. The sheet also gives Tier 1 and Tier 3 numbers.

Can Goblin King in Throne be a companion or ally?

He makes a far better quest-giver, rival, or patron than a frontline ally — he commands rather than fights. He ships with his own bound companion, Snik, the royal shield.

Is he a solo boss?

Yes — three legendary actions plus the Cowardly Tyrant reaction give him the action economy to anchor a fight, ideally with a few goblin minions as living shields.
