Goblin Raider 2 — The Encounter

Hooded blade-goblin slipping in low and quick · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Goblin Raider 2

Where their axe-swinging kin charge the wall, these Raiders go through the side door. They are the warband's cutthroats and flankers, prizing a quiet approach and a blade in the back over open butchery. The hood is half disguise and half superstition, for a Raider believes a covered face cannot be cursed by the dying. They drill in pairs, one drawing a foe's guard while the other cuts behind it, and their buckler is as much a weapon as their sword, used to batter, bind, and create the opening they need. A Raider of this stripe is patient by goblin standards, willing to stalk a sentry for an hour to take it without a sound, yet it shares the breed's love of plunder and its readiness to vanish when a fight stops being easy. Caravan guards learn to fear the hooded shapes that pace the firelight just out of reach.

Nimble Escape. The raider can take the Disengage or Hide action as a bonus action on each of its turns.

Cut and Cover. The raider fights with sword and buckler. While it holds the buckler it gains a +1 bonus to AC (included above). As a signature trick, once per turn when the raider hits a creature it has advantage against, it deals an extra 7 (2d6) slashing damage, then may immediately move up to 10 ft. without provoking opportunity attacks.

Actions

Multiattack. The raider makes two curved sword attacks.

Curved Sword. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6+3) slashing damage.

Sling Stone. Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, range 30/120 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d4+3) bludgeoning damage.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Shield Bash. Once per turn as a bonus action after hitting with its sword, the raider slams its buckler; the target must succeed on a DC 12 Strength save or have disadvantage on its next attack roll.

A lean goblin in a deep hood weaves forward behind a battered buckler, a curved sword held low and ready to slip past a guard.

Drawn Guard (signature). Once per short rest, Goblin Raider 2 feints to draw a foe's attention; an ally gains advantage on its next attack against that creature, and the creature has disadvantage on its next attack against the ally.

Actions

Shortblade. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+3) piercing damage.

Reactions

Buckler Turn. When hit by a melee attack, Goblin Raider 2 angles its buckler to reduce the damage by 1d6.

A silent partner who paces the dark and signals the kill with a tap of blade on shield.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · NATIVE
AC14HP40 (9d6+9) To-hit+5Save DC12

Open from stealth or with a flanking ally to land Cut and Cover, then slide away free of opportunity attacks. Kill-priority is unarmored casters. Fight it in pairs that set up each other's advantage; a lone raider is brittle.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP112 (15d8+45) To-hit+6Save DC14

Hit-and-run the back line, using Shield Bash to spoil a caster's next action and Cut and Cover to escape reach. Run two or three alongside a goblin leader, never solo.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP184 (21d8+89) To-hit+8Save DC16

Skirmish around a heavier flagship threat, peeling off and assassinating isolated PCs. Use the lair's shadows for repeated Hide-and-strike. Pair it with a bigger boss; it cannot anchor a fight alone.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Goblin Raider 2?

It is a CR 2 add-on at its native Tier 1 (AC 14, HP 40). Tier 2 (~CR 6) and Tier 3 (~CR 11) versions are provided with the same traits and scaled numbers.

Can Goblin Raider 2 be a companion or ally?

Yes. This hooded skirmisher works well as a scout, lookout, or flanking partner who sets up the party's strikers. Use the bound companion Hush for a friendlier ally, or run the Raider as a quiet, plunder-minded hireling.

How does it differ from the other goblin raiders?

This one is the flanker and cutthroat: higher Dexterity, a sword-and-buckler style, and Cut and Cover that rewards attacking with advantage and then slipping away. Where an axe-raider charges head-on, this one wants the side door and the back line.
