Mist
winged greatsword-rider who calls the killing fog of battle
Mist — The Encounter
winged greatsword-rider who calls the killing fog of battle · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Mist
Mist takes her name from the rolling cloud she summons, the same fog that old verse says clings to the valkyries as they ride down to the slain. Mounted and wreathed in grey, she lifts her two-handed blade and the field goes blind around her. Her sisters in the flight keep their sight; the doomed do not. Within that shroud Mist hews with great overhand strokes, each one biting through to a second enemy, while the rest of the warband cuts unseen throats on every side. She is no solitary hero but the warband's veil, the reason the Maidens of Valkyria fall on a host like death out of an empty sky.
Run Mist in Sixty Seconds
- Open with Shroud of War then your sisters see through it while the enemy is heavily obscured.
- Wade into clustered foes then Overhand Cleave spills 2d8 onto a second enemy each turn.
- Recharge the fog on a 5-6 then keep the killing murk rolling over the whole warband.
- Stay inside the cloud with your sisters then never step out alone where the fog cannot help you.
Mist
Large celestial, lawful neutral
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEShroud of War (signature, recharge 5-6). Mist conjures a 20-foot-radius fog centered on herself for 1 minute. The area is lightly obscured to her allies but heavily obscured to enemies. Mist and her sisters ignore this obscurement when attacking.
Overhand Cleave. Once per turn when Mist hits a creature with her greatsword, a different creature within 5 feet of the target takes 9 (2d8) slashing damage.
Actions
Multiattack. Mist makes two greatsword attacks.
Greatsword. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (3d8+4) slashing damage.
She raises a greatsword over her head and the battle-fog rolls in, blinding the foe while her sisters strike from the murk.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Mist rides into the thick of a small flight and drops Shroud of War over her sisters. Open by fogging the enemy line, then cleave into clustered foes. She fights inside the warband, never apart from it.
Lead with Shroud of War so the whole flight attacks from concealment while enemies swing blind. Position Mist among clustered foes to let Overhand Cleave hit two at once. Recharge the fog and keep it rolling over the warband.
Open every fight by blanketing the warband in Shroud of War and let the maidens butcher a blinded enemy. Wade Mist into the tightest cluster for Overhand Cleave value. She is the flight's veil and stays inside it, never charging out solo.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Mist?
Mist is CR 6 at her native Tier 2 (AC 16, HP 123), a mounted battlefield-control elite. The tier tables scale her toward CR 2 for low play and CR 11 for high tables.
How does Mist fight alongside the rest of the Maidens of Valkyria?
She is the flight's veil. Shroud of War lets her sisters attack from concealment while enemies fight blind, and Overhand Cleave punishes any cluster that bunches up to find her in the fog.
Is Mist meant to be fought alone?
No. She has no legendary actions and her whole value is the fog that empowers her sisters. Pulled solo the shroud only hides her, so she should always be faced with the warband.
