Adonijah
cloaked crested sentinel who keeps the line's vigil
Adonijah — The Encounter
cloaked crested sentinel who keeps the line's vigil · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Adonijah
Adonijah is the Methuselans' standing watch, the sentinel in ceremonial plate whose blade point rests on the earth until the moment it must rise. He has held the line's vigil through more wars than the younger champions have names for, and his stillness is not weariness but discipline; nothing slips past the man who has watched for centuries. In the warband he is the guardian who punishes any foe foolish enough to ignore him and reach for an ally instead. The grandmothers say Adonijah does not sleep so much as keep one eye on the dark, and that the line rests easy only because he does not.
Run Adonijah in Sixty Seconds
- Stand by the vulnerable then place Adonijah next to the allies enemies most want to reach.
- Punish the bypass then Sentinel's Vigil hits any adjacent foe attacking someone else and drops its speed to 0.
- Hold the watch then keep him still and guarding rather than charging out.
- Hard to rattle then Unwavering gives advantage against fear, charm, and ambush.
Adonijah
Medium humanoid (human), lawful neutral
CR 5 · 1,800 XP · GUIDELINESentinel's Vigil (signature). When a creature within 5 feet of Adonijah makes an attack against a target other than him, he can make one greatsword attack against that creature as a reaction. A creature hit by this attack has its speed reduced to 0 until the start of its next turn.
Unwavering. Adonijah has advantage on saving throws against being frightened or charmed, and on Wisdom (Perception) checks made to notice a hidden creature.
Actions
Multiattack. Adonijah makes two greatsword attacks.
Vigil Greatsword. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d8+3) slashing damage.
A crested, cloak-shrouded sentinel who stands the watch the long-lived have kept since before living memory.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Stand Adonijah beside the allies most likely to be targeted; Sentinel's Vigil punishes any adjacent foe that swings at someone else and stops it cold. Keep him still and watchful. He guards the warband's line rather than chasing kills alone.
Position him among the Methuselans so Sentinel's Vigil threatens reaction strikes that pin attackers in place. Trade greatsword blows with whatever fronts him, and rely on Unwavering against fear and ambush. Run him as the warband's protective watch, never wandering off.
Same guardian kit, scaled up. Adonijah locks down any foe that bypasses him to strike an ally, holding the warband's formation intact. He keeps the vigil at the line's side, never as a solo boss.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Adonijah?
Adonijah is CR 5 at his native Tier 2 (1,800 XP). Scale his AC, HP, to-hit and save DC to the Tier 1 or Tier 3 bands as needed.
How does Adonijah fight alongside the rest of the Methuselans?
He is the warband's guardian. Sentinel's Vigil lets him punish and pin any foe that ignores him to strike a nearby Methuselan, anchoring the formation.
Is Adonijah a solo boss?
No. He has no legendary actions and his value is protecting allies; field him as the protective sentinel of a Methuselan warband.
