Elron — The Encounter

grey-templed veteran who holds the wall with a greatsword · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Elron

Elron is the Methuselans' bulwark, the veteran who plants his boots and does not move while the rest of the line forms around him. His greatsword has been re-edged so many times it is more memory than steel, and he carries it raised in a guard the younger champions are taught to mirror. In the warband he is the fixed point: hold beside Elron and the enemy's blows find disadvantage; stray from him and learn why the old soldier still breathes after so many wars. The line measures its courage by how near it can stand to him.

Disciplined Guard (signature). While Elron takes the Dodge action or has not moved this turn, attack rolls against allies within 5 feet of him are made with disadvantage.

Tireless. Elron has advantage on saving throws against exhaustion and against being knocked prone.

Actions

Multiattack. Elron makes two greatsword attacks.

Greatsword. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) slashing damage.

Guarding Sweep (recharge 5-6). Elron sweeps his greatsword in a 10-foot cone. Each creature there must make a DC 15 Dexterity save, taking 18 (4d8) slashing damage on a failure, or half as much on a success.

A grey-templed soldier who has stood in a hundred shield walls and means to make this one his hundred-and-first.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP45 (7d8+14) To-hit+4Save DC12

Plant Elron at the wall and keep allies within 5 ft. so Disciplined Guard imposes disadvantage on attacks against them. Hold position, swing the greatsword, and save Guarding Sweep for a cluster. He is the warband's anchor, never a roamer.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC17HP105 (14d8+42) To-hit+7Save DC15

Stand firm beside the line so nearby Methuselans gain Disciplined Guard's protection. Trade blows with the front rank and unleash Guarding Sweep into a packed cone when it recharges. Tireless keeps him upright. Run him as the immovable centre of the wall.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP180 (24d8+72) To-hit+9Save DC17

Same defensive kit, larger numbers. Elron holds the wall, shelters adjacent kin, and clears clustered foes with Guarding Sweep. He never charges out; the warband forms on him.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Elron?

Elron is CR 5 at his native Tier 2 (1,800 XP). Scale his AC, HP, to-hit and save DC to the Tier 1 or Tier 3 bands as needed.

How does Elron fight alongside the rest of the Methuselans?

He is the anchor. Elron holds position so Disciplined Guard shields the Methuselans beside him, letting the warband form a protected wall around the old veteran.

Is Elron a solo boss?

No. He has no legendary actions and his strength is protecting allies; deploy him as the defensive centre of a Methuselan warband.
