Randal — The Encounter

crouching lion-faced stalker who pounces from the flank · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Randal

Randal is the Methuselans' flank and ambush, the long-lived hunter who circles wide while the heavy champions hold the centre. Centuries of stalking have given his face a leonine set and his movements the stillness of a cat before the leap. He waits, low and unhurried, for an enemy to overcommit, then pounces from the side to bear a straggler down and tear it open while the warband's wall pins everyone else. The old line jokes that Randal has never once started a fight, and never once lost the one he finished.

Pounce (signature). If Randal moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and hits it with a claw this turn, the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength save or be knocked prone. If the target is prone, Randal can make one bite attack against it as a bonus action.

Predator's Patience. Randal has advantage on attack rolls against any creature that has not yet acted in combat, and against any creature that is prone.

Actions

Multiattack. Randal makes two claw attacks.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP44 (8d8+8) To-hit+5Save DC12

Hold Randal on the flank until a foe overextends, then Pounce: charge 20 ft., claw to knock prone, bite as a bonus action. Predator's Patience hands him advantage on prone or not-yet-acted targets. He picks off stragglers while the warband holds the line.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP104 (16d8+32) To-hit+7Save DC15

Strike the squishiest enemy the moment combat opens for guaranteed advantage. Pounce to prone, follow with the bite, then keep clawing the downed target. Let the heavy Methuselans anchor while Randal kills from the side, never alone in the open.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP175 (23d8+69) To-hit+9Save DC17

Same ambush kit at higher numbers. Flank, pounce, prone, bite, and exploit advantage to drop casters fast. He hunts alongside the warband's wall, finishing what the line pins down.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Randal?

Randal is CR 5 at his native Tier 2 (1,800 XP). Adjust his AC, HP, to-hit and save DC to the Tier 1 or Tier 3 bands for your party.

How does Randal fight alongside the rest of the Methuselans?

He is the flanker and finisher. While the heavy champions hold the centre, Randal pounces stragglers from the side, prones them, and exploits advantage to kill fast.

Is Randal a solo boss?

No. He has no legendary actions and depends on the warband to pin and distract; deploy him as an ambusher within a Methuselan pack.
