Vys — The Encounter

wolf-pelt brawler who breaks lines with bare hands · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Vys

Vys carries no blade and never has; among the Methuselans he is the line's living battering ram, the one sent to crack a formation open so younger champions can pour through. The wolf mantle across his shoulders is older than most of the warband, taken from a beast he is said to have wrestled down barehanded in his first century. He fights happiest when bloodied, grappling the strongest foe and slamming it prone for the rest of the deathless line to finish. The grandfathers warn their grandchildren: when Vys grins through a broken lip, the wall is already lost.

Bloodied Fury (signature). While Vys has half his hit points or fewer, his unarmed strikes deal an extra 4 (1d8) bludgeoning damage and he has advantage on Strength checks to grapple or shove.

Pack Charger. If Vys moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and hits it with a Pummel this turn, the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength save or be knocked prone.

Actions

Multiattack. Vys makes three Pummel attacks.

Pummel. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d6+4) bludgeoning damage.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Seize (bonus action). Vys attempts to grapple a Large or smaller creature within reach (DC 15).

A scarred old fist-fighter in a wolf's hide who has punched his way through three centuries of shield walls.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC13HP45 (7d8+14) To-hit+4Save DC13

Send Vys charging straight at the enemy's biggest body, prone it with Pack Charger, then grapple and hold it for the warband. Lean into Bloodied Fury once he is hurt. He is the can-opener for the Methuselan line, not a lone scrapper.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC15HP114 (12d8+60) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open with a 20-ft. charge to knock a key target prone, then Seize it as a bonus action and pin it in place. As his HP drops, Bloodied Fury makes every fist hurt more, so let allies surround the foe he holds. Fight him as part of the pack.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC17HP186 (24d8+78) To-hit+9Save DC17

Same brawler kit, scaled up. Charge, prone, grapple, and let Bloodied Fury reward the punishment he soaks. Hold the enemy champion still while the rest of the Methuselans carve it apart; he never duels solo.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Vys?

Vys is CR 6 at his native Tier 2 (2,300 XP). Shift his AC, HP, to-hit and save DC to the Tier 1 or Tier 3 bands to fit your party's level.

How does Vys fight alongside the rest of the Methuselans?

He is the line-breaker. Vys charges in to prone and grapple the toughest enemy, pinning it so the warband's armed champions can finish what he opens up.

Is Vys a solo boss?

No. He has no legendary actions and relies on allies to capitalize on his grapples; run him inside a Methuselan warband.
