Sporothorn — The Encounter

twin-blade duelist of the fungal warband · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Sporothorn

The Sporothorn is the warband's bladework, a quick spotted-cap fighter built to dance through a melee and bleed it dry. Two curved blades let it strike twice and twice again as it spins past, and its spores answer any blade that misses with a sting of poison. Unlike the steady Mycelion, the Sporothorn never stands still; it tumbles free of reach, picks the wounded, and carves them apart. Grove-lore tells of the red-ruffed dancer that fights at the edges of the host, finishing what the bruisers have battered. It is a duelist, not a anchor; pin it down and it falters, but loose among soft targets it is the cruelest knife in the colony.

Whirling Guard. While wielding two blades, the Sporothorn adds +1 to its AC (included) against the first melee attack it can see against it each round.

Spore Riposte. When a creature within 5 feet misses the Sporothorn with a melee attack, that creature must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution save or take 3 (1d6) poison damage.

A wiry capped duelist ringed in a red feathered collar, twin curved blades spinning, darting in and out of reach faster than the heavier caps can follow.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · NATIVE
AC14HP45 (7d8+14) To-hit+5Save DC12

Dart in on a wounded or isolated target, strike twice, then Tumble free before it can answer. Let Spore Riposte tax anyone who swings and misses. Pick targets the bruisers have already softened.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP120 (16d8+48) To-hit+7Save DC14

Skirmish the flanks of the pack: dive on casters and archers the Gloomcaps have drawn out, then disengage. Keep it mobile so it never trades blows with a foe still at full strength.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP200 (24d8+96) To-hit+9Save DC16

Fight as the dueling wing of the warband. Hunt isolated targets, tumble between them, and finish what the heavy caps batter. Solo it gets ground down, so keep it tethered to the colony.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Sporothorn?

Sporothorn is CR 2 (450 XP) at native Tier 1. Use AC 16 / ~120 HP for Tier 2 or AC 18 / ~200 HP for Tier 3; the traits are identical and only the numbers move.

How does Sporothorn fight alongside the rest of the Shroomkin?

It duels and finishes. The Sporothorn tumbles past the line to hunt casters and wounded foes the Gloomcaps and Mycelions have softened, then disengages. It is the warband's mobile knife.

Is Sporothorn a solo threat?

No. It is a hit-and-run striker with no legendary actions and modest HP. Pinned down it folds; run it as the fast wing of a mixed warband.
