Katuray — The Encounter

axe-and-shield bulwark braced at the Thorjacks' fore · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Katuray

The Thorjacks call the spot where the wedge meets the foe the breaking-point, and Katuray is the man who stands on it. The lowland chroniclers describe him as the bulwark, planted at the very front with his kite shield braced and his storm-axe held crosswise, daring the enemy to push through. Where Wangbu shields his neighbors with a charm, Katuray simply refuses to give ground, and the veterans gather behind him because his shadow is the safest place on the field. The thunder in his axe is an afterthought; his real weapon is stubbornness. He fights as the front face of the line and nothing more. Alone he is a stubborn rock easily walked around; in the wedge he is the rock the whole storm breaks against.

Braced Guard. If Katuray does not move on his turn, he gains a +2 bonus to AC and to Strength saving throws until the start of his next turn.

Bulwark. While Katuray is conscious, allied Thorjacks within 5 ft. of him have resistance to the extra damage of critical hits (taking only the normal roll).

Actions

Multiattack. Katuray makes two battleaxe attacks.

Storm-Battleaxe. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d8+4) slashing damage plus 3 (1d6) thunder damage, or 10 (1d10+4) plus thunder if used in two hands.

Shield Shove. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6+4) bludgeoning damage, and the target is pushed 5 ft. and cannot move closer to Katuray until the start of its next turn.

A heavily plated warrior braces low behind a battered kite shield, storm-axe held crosswise, refusing to be moved.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP53 (7d8+21) To-hit+4Save DC12

Plant Katuray at the fore and have him stand still for the Braced Guard bonus. Use Shield Shove to keep chargers from reaching the soft allies behind him, and keep his kin within 5 ft. so Bulwark blunts crits. He holds the breaking-point, never advancing alone.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC18HP119 (14d8+56) To-hit+7Save DC14

Open by setting Braced Guard at the front of the wedge, then Shield Shove anyone trying to push into the line. Keep the hammer-bearers and reavers within 5 ft. so Bulwark softens incoming crits. He is the front face of the formation, holding while others strike.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC20HP190 (20d8+100) To-hit+9Save DC17

Run him as the immovable fore of the shield-wall: braced and still, shoving back chargers and shielding the warband from critical hits. He fights as the line's front rank, never solo. His worth is the cluster of Thorjacks sheltering in his shadow, so keep them tight.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Katuray?

Katuray is CR 5 (1,800 XP) at his native Tier 2, a defensive bulwark rather than a solo boss. Use AC 16 / +4 for Tier 1 or AC 20 / +9 for Tier 3.

How does Katuray fight alongside the rest of the Thorjacks?

He is the front face of the wedge: braced and immovable, he shoves back chargers and shields the warband from critical hits with Bulwark. The hammer-bearers and reavers shelter in his shadow and strike past him while he holds the breaking-point.

Should the party try to bypass Katuray?

That is the right read. Alone he is a stubborn rock easily walked around. His threat is positional, so isolating or rounding him removes the protection he gives the rest of the Thorjacks.
