Momol — The Encounter

crested sword-and-shield veteran of the Thorjack line · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Momol

If the Thorjacks have a backbone, it is the rank of veterans like Momol. The lowland chroniclers note that he is no champion and seeks no songs; he is the steady arm that keeps the shield-line from buckling while the hammer-bearers and reavers do their work. His sword's jagged edge is storm-tempered, and the skull blazon on his shield marks him as a sworn line-holder, one who has taken the old oath never to give a step. He fights best pressed shoulder-to-shoulder with his kin, where his oath and his blade both bite harder. Pull him from the line and he weakens; keep him in it and he is the stubborn wall that lets the rest of the Thorjacks fight as one.

Line-Holder. While at least one other Thorjack is within 5 ft. of Momol, he gains a +1 bonus to AC and his weapon attacks deal an extra 3 (1d6) slashing damage.

Storm-Forged Vigor. The first time each turn that Momol takes thunder or lightning damage, he reduces it by 5.

Actions

Multiattack. Momol makes two sword attacks.

Jagged Sword. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d8+3) slashing damage plus 2 (1d4) thunder damage.

Shield Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+3) bludgeoning damage, and the target cannot take reactions until the start of its next turn.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Hold the Line (Reaction). When a creature within 5 ft. of Momol tries to move away, he can make one sword attack against it.

A crested veteran sets his skull-marked shield and levels a jagged storm-sword, every line of him braced to hold his ground.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC15HP49 (9d8+9) To-hit+4Save DC12

Keep Momol shoulder-to-shoulder with another Thorjack so Line-Holder is always on. Shield Slam casters to deny their reactions, and use Hold the Line to punish anyone slipping past. He plants and holds; he does not pursue.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC17HP112 (15d8+45) To-hit+6Save DC14

Open beside an ally to switch on Line-Holder's bonus damage, then Shield Slam a spellcaster to lock down reactions. Hold the Line snags anyone trying to reach the back rank. Run him as the steady wall in the wedge, never breaking off to chase.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC19HP180 (24d8+72) To-hit+9Save DC17

Run him as the anchor of the shield-rank: he holds station beside his kin, batters down reactions with Shield Slam, and pins runners with Hold the Line so the reavers can finish them. He fights as part of the line, never solo; his oath only bites when allies stand with him.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Momol?

Momol is CR 5 (1,800 XP) at his native Tier 2, a steadfast line-holder rather than a solo boss. Use AC 15 / +4 for Tier 1 or AC 19 / +9 for Tier 3.

How does Momol fight alongside the rest of the Thorjacks?

He is the line's backbone: standing beside his kin to power Line-Holder, slamming casters to deny reactions, and using Hold the Line to pin anyone who tries to slip past. He keeps the shield-rank from buckling so the hammer-bearers and reavers can work.

Is Momol any good fighting alone?

Much weaker. Line-Holder switches off without an ally within 5 ft., dropping both his AC and his damage. He is built to be one tile in a wall, not a lone duelist.
