Gullan
twin-axe headhunter of the troll warband
Gullan — The Encounter
twin-axe headhunter of the troll warband · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Gullan
Gullan is the War Trolls' headhunter, the one that breaks off from the wedge to chase down the wounded and the fleeing. He fights with a pair of broad hand-axes and a beast's nose for blood, drifting through the chaos toward whoever bleeds hardest. The march-grimoires warn that once Gullan marks a quarry, no shield wall and no horse outpaces him for long; the troll-flesh never tires and never quits. In the warband he is the flanker, the one who turns a broken enemy retreat into a slaughter. The dead he leaves are properly dead only if fire or acid touched them first.
Run Gullan in Sixty Seconds
- Fire or acid then regeneration shuts off and the headhunter stays down.
- Top off your wounded then Bloodscent loses its advantage against full-HP targets.
- He stacked a bleed then end the Rending Hook damage with any healing before your turn.
- Protect the soft backline then he can't peel off to chase them down.
- He never duels alone then expect the warband to pin you while he flanks.
Gullan
Large giant (troll), chaotic evil
CR 11 · 7,200 XP · GUIDELINERegeneration. Gullan regains 15 hit points at the start of its turn. If it takes acid or fire damage, this trait doesn't function at the start of its next turn. Gullan dies only if it starts its turn with 0 hit points and doesn't regenerate.
Twin Reaper. When Gullan takes the Attack action with both hand-axes, it can make one additional hand-axe attack as part of that action (already included in Multiattack).
Bloodscent. Gullan has advantage on attack rolls against any creature that is below its hit point maximum, hunting the wounded across the field.
Actions
Multiattack. Gullan makes three hand-axe attacks.
Hand-Axe. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+5) slashing damage.
Rending Hook. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+5) slashing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw or take 7 (2d6) ongoing slashing damage at the start of its next turn from the deep wound.
A wolf-faced troll spreads two heavy hand-axes wide, eyeing the bleeding for the kill.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
A fast flanker for a small troll mob. Gullan ignores the front line and lopes to the squishiest, most wounded PC, hacking with both axes while the rest of the trolls hold attention.
He is the warband's wound-hunter. Bloodscent gives him advantage on anyone already hurt, so he finishes targets the other trolls softened. Rending Hook stacks bleed on a key caster.
Run him as the warband's flanker, never solo. He peels off the troll line to chase the bloodied, three axe-swings a round with advantage, stacking bleed. Acid or fire is the only way to keep his regeneration from sealing the wounds.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

No. He has no legendary actions and is an elite skirmisher. Run him alongside the War Trolls as their wound-hunting flanker.
