Jora — The Encounter

spear-and-axe skirmisher of the troll warband · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Jora

Jora is the War Trolls' skirmisher, lither than its kin and fond of striking before the foe is ready. It fights with a long spear held at reach and a heavy axe across its back for when the killing turns close. Behind its crude mask it watches the field with a hunter's patience, marking the most dangerous quarry before the warband even charges. The march-grimoires note that Jora opens many of the horde's battles, jabbing from outside the line to draw the enemy onto the heavier trolls. It moves like something that has never feared a wound. Fire and acid are the only marks it cannot heal.

Regeneration. Jora regains 15 hit points at the start of its turn. If it takes acid or fire damage, this trait doesn't function at the start of its next turn. Jora dies only if it starts its turn with 0 hit points and doesn't regenerate.

Reach Fighter. Jora's spear has reach 10 ft. When a creature enters its reach, Jora can make an opportunity attack with the spear (it still has its normal reaction).

Hunter's Mark. Jora deals an extra 7 (2d6) damage to a creature it hasn't yet hit this combat, picking its target before the rest of the warband closes.

Actions

Multiattack. Jora makes two attacks: one with its spear and one with its back-axe, or two spear attacks.

War-Spear. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d6+5) piercing damage.

Back-Axe. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+5) slashing damage.

A masked troll levels a long war-spear, an axe slung across its back for closer work.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP47 (7d8+15) To-hit+4Save DC12

A reach skirmisher screening a small troll mob. Jora jabs from 10 ft. with the spear, picks off whoever closes, and uses Hunter's Mark on the party's biggest threat first.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP110 (13d10+39) To-hit+7Save DC14

It is the warband's opener. Jora pokes from reach to bait the party onto the heavier trolls, punishing anyone who steps in with a free spear attack. Keep it on the flank of the troll line, never out alone.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC17HP178 (17d10+85) To-hit+9Save DC16

Run it as the warband's skirmisher, never solo. Mark the priority target, jab from 10 ft., and zone melee with reach opportunity attacks while the bruisers close. Acid or fire is the only thing that stops its regeneration.
