Domeng — The Encounter

Hooded Rat-Brawler of the Drowned Slum · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Domeng

Where the tide leaves filth and the lamplight drowns, the rat-folk rule the flooded warrens, and Domeng rules the rat-folk. Folk of the sunken quarter whisper that he was whelped in a granary cellar and grew fat on what stronger beasts left behind, learning early that teeth and patience outlast strength. He wears no blade, for he needs none; his wrapped knuckles have cracked more jaws than any sword, and the bone spur on his shoulder he tore from a beast that thought him prey. He marks his fists with the coin-sign of his belt, for every fight is a debt collected. Where one rat-tough stands, a dozen wait in the dark behind him, and Domeng never fights a battle he has not already weighted in his favor. Kill the lamps, he tells his pack, and the slum belongs to those who see in the black.

Pack Cunning. Domeng has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of his allies is within 5 feet of the creature and that ally isn't incapacitated.

Gutter Footing. Signature. Domeng ignores difficult terrain made of rubble, refuse, or flooded ground, and opportunity attacks against him are made with disadvantage when he moves through it.

Actions

Multiattack. Domeng makes two Spiked Fist attacks. If both hit the same target, the target must succeed on a DC 12 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Spiked Fist. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (2d4+3) bludgeoning damage plus 2 (1d4) piercing damage from the bone spikes.

Shoulder Charge (Recharge 5-6). Domeng moves up to his speed in a straight line and rams a creature with his spiked pauldron. The target must make a DC 12 Strength saving throw, taking 9 (2d6+2) bludgeoning damage and being pushed 10 feet and knocked prone on a failure, or half damage with no extra effect on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Scurry. Bonus Action. Domeng takes the Disengage or Hide action.

A hood-shrouded rat-man with red eyes and corded muscle, fists bound in stained wrappings, a spiked spur of bone jutting from one shoulder and a coin-stamped buckle at his belt. He plants his clawed feet in the rubble of the drowned district like a king of the gutters.

Swarm-Sense (signature). Domeng has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell and can sense the presence of any Small or smaller creature within 30 feet, even through walls.

Actions

Gnawing Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (2d4+2) piercing damage, and the target can't regain hit points until the start of its next turn.

Reactions

Trip the Heel. When an enemy within 5 feet stands up from prone or tries to move away, Domeng may force a DC 12 Dexterity save or the creature is knocked prone.

A mange-scarred war-cur bred in the sluice tunnels, loyal only to the rat who feeds it, and it eats whatever Domeng knocks down.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · NATIVE
AC14HP52 (8d8+16) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open with Shoulder Charge into your fragile back-liners (casters first) to knock them prone, then Multiattack to keep them down. Stay adjacent to a pack-ally so Pack Cunning gives advantage, and use Scurry to vanish into rubble when bloodied. Kill-priority for the party: drop Domeng's nearby allies first so his advantage evaporates.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP126 (14d10+49) To-hit+7Save DC15

Run him as a brute enforcer in a warren of rat-folk and dire vermin, not alone. Charge a clustered backline, knock prone, then Multiattack the downed target. Pair him with a bigger threat (a plague-witch or a wererat lord) who handles the casters while Domeng pins the front.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP207 (18d10+108) To-hit+9Save DC17

At this tier he is a lieutenant in a flooded-slum lair, never the centerpiece. Surround him with minions so Pack Cunning is always live, charge the squishiest target, and let lair hazards (flooded ground, collapsing rubble) play to Gutter Footing. Pair him with a far bigger boss; he is the muscle, not the mind.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Domeng?

Domeng is built at CR 2 (450 XP) in his native Tier 1 band: AC 14, 52 HP, +4 to hit, save DC 12. The sheet also scales up to Tier 2 (CR 6-ish) and Tier 3 (CR 11-ish) using the same traits and actions with bigger numbers, so you can drop him into a higher-level slum or warren as an enforcer.

Can Domeng be a companion or ally?

Yes. As a roguish gutter-fixer he makes a believable hireling, smuggler-guide, or reluctant ally for a party that earns the rat-folk's respect. Run him with his war-cur Sump as a paired duo, or hand the party Sump alone as a tracking companion if Domeng stays a rival.

Is Domeng a solo boss?

No. He has no legendary actions and only one reaction-style escape, so a four-player party will out-act him. Always field him with minions or as the muscle beside a larger threat; his Pack Cunning trait is built to reward fighting in a mob, not alone.
