Jhavak
Jhavak — The Encounter
Saffron Duelist of the Wandering Blade-Sect · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Jhavak
Jhavak walked out of a sky the colour of bruised silver, one of the wandering blade-sect that trade their swords across worlds for coin, vendetta, or memory. The sect raises its initiates in the discipline of the spinning glaive: a single weapon, doubled at both ends, learned through years of kneeling drill until the body forgets its own weight. They are an austere folk, long-lived and longer-grudged, marked by skin like beaten gold and a contempt for those who fight without form. Jhavak himself is a mercenary-ascetic, sworn to a debt he will not name, and he kneels in the road only to rise faster than the eye can follow. Those who have crossed him speak of a blur of brass and steel, a sweep at the ankles, and the strange humming note the blades make as they pass close enough to draw breath. He does not boast. He simply collects.
Run Jhavak in Sixty Seconds
- Hold the stance. Start Jhavak kneeling; his first Attack action lets him stand without provoking and crit on 19-20. Open by springing up and putting three reach attacks into the nearest soft target.
- Reach is 10 feet, always on. Bladed Reach means he opportunity-attacks creatures ENTERING his 10-foot ring, not just leaving it. Players who walk up to him get hit on the way in.
- Kill-priority: back line. His 40-foot speed and reach let him skip the tank and stab the caster or healer. Send him at whoever has the lowest AC and the scariest spells.
- When bloodied, dance. Lean on Parry against the biggest melee hit each round and Sidestep (Disengage) to peel off and re-pick a target instead of trading blows.
- Three ways to run it: duelist (Parry/Sidestep, one-on-one with the party's striker), line-breaker (Whirling Sweep into a clustered party to prone the front), or drill-master (paired with Sehv or reach minions so Formation Drill chains opportunity attacks).
Jhavak
Medium humanoid (any race), lawful neutral
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEGlaive-Dance Stance. Jhavak begins combat kneeling in his coiled stance. The first time he takes the Attack action each combat, he may stand from kneeling without provoking opportunity attacks and his attacks that turn score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20.
Bladed Reach. Jhavak's double-bladed glaive threatens every creature within 10 feet. He can make opportunity attacks against creatures that enter that reach, not only those that leave it.
Actions
Multiattack. Jhavak makes three attacks with his double-bladed glaive.
Double-Bladed Glaive. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (1d10+4) slashing damage. On a critical hit, the target also takes 4 (1d8) psychic damage as the spinning blades sing.
Whirling Sweep (Recharge 5-6). Jhavak spins his glaive in a low arc. Each creature within 10 feet must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw, taking 18 (4d8) slashing damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. Creatures that fail are knocked prone.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Parry (Reaction). When a creature Jhavak can see hits him with a melee attack, he adds 3 to his AC against that attack, potentially causing it to miss. He must be wielding his glaive.
Sidestep (Bonus Action). Jhavak takes the Disengage or Dash action.
A lean, saffron-skinned swordsman kneels in a coiled crouch, the twin blades of his glaive held level across his guard, every muscle wound to spring. His face is mottled like aged brass and his eyes never leave you.
Jhavak, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEFormation Drill (signature). While Jhavak is within 10 feet of Jhavak (or another ally with a reach weapon), both gain a +2 bonus to opportunity attack rolls and may make opportunity attacks against creatures that enter their reach.
Actions
Twin-Blade Glaive. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d10+4) slashing damage.
Reactions
Cover the Master. When an ally Jhavak can see within 10 feet is hit by an attack, Jhavak may impose disadvantage on that attack roll by interposing her glaive.
A younger initiate of the same sect, Jhavak shadows Jhavak through her debt-years, mirroring his stance a half-beat behind.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open by standing from his stance and making two glaive attacks at reach, picking off the nearest light-armored caster. If foes cluster within 10 feet, use Whirling Sweep to knock them prone, then Parry the first melee answer. Pair him with a tougher leader or a pack of skirmishers; he is a duelist, not a wall.
Open with Glaive-Dance Stance for the boosted crit range and three reach attacks on whoever stands closest, prioritizing healers and back-line casters he can reach over the front-liners. When clustered, lead with Whirling Sweep to prone the line, then Parry and Sidestep to stay mobile. Run him as an elite lieutenant beside a bigger threat or a knot of disciples, not alone.
Open in stance, three reach strikes a round, and ride his Bladed Reach to punish anyone closing the gap. Recharge Whirling Sweep to keep the party prone and split. Pair him with a flagship boss or a lair full of disciples and reach-weapon minions; with Formation Drill the opportunity attacks become a meat grinder.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Jhavak?
Jhavak is built as a CR 6 elite at his native Tier 2 (levels 5-10): AC 16, 123 HP, +7 to hit, save DC 14, about 30-40 damage a round. Scaled stat lines for Tier 1 (levels 1-4) and Tier 3 (levels 11-15) are included so you can drop him into any party.
Can Jhavak be a companion or ally?
Yes. As a disciplined blade-sect mercenary he hires out readily. Run him as an NPC ally with the same stat block, or use the included companion Sehv (a bound disciple) as a lighter reach-weapon escort whose Formation Drill rewards fighting in a line.
Is Jhavak a solo boss?
No. He is an elite skirmisher and lieutenant, not a centerpiece boss; a four-player party will out-act him over a long fight. He shines beside a flagship threat, leading a knot of disciples, or as a sudden duelist who springs from his kneeling stance to gut the back line.
