Lugaw — The Encounter

Diwata of the blooming groves, guardian-spirit of green places · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Lugaw

Among the old folk of the islands, Lugaw is named a diwata, one of the enchanted guardian-spirits said to dwell in the great trees, the rivers, and the unbroken green of the wilds. Farmers leave offerings of rice and first fruits at the roots of the balete before clearing any field, for a diwata's blessing makes the soil generous and her displeasure makes it barren. Lugaw is counted among the gentler of these spirits, a keeper of healing herbs and blossoms who tends the sick and the wounded that wander beneath her canopy. Yet gentleness is not weakness. When loggers, poachers, or careless men spill blood in her grove, the flowers turn cruel: pollen that drowns the lungs, thorns that drink vitality, roots that seize the fleeing. She offers warning first, in birdsong and rustling leaves, and answers only what refuses to listen.

Verdant Ward. Lugaw and any ally she chooses within 10 ft. of her have resistance to poison damage and cannot have their hit point maximum reduced. While she stands on natural ground or growth, her movement is never slowed by difficult terrain made of plants.

Blossoming Renewal. Signature. At the start of each of Lugaw's turns, one creature of her choice within 30 ft. regains 7 (2d6) hit points and ends one disease or the poisoned condition affecting it. She cannot heal the same creature on two consecutive rounds.

Actions

Multiattack. Lugaw makes two attacks with her Flowering Staff.

Flowering Staff. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (3d6+4) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or take 7 (2d6) poison damage as thorns drink its strength.

Pollen Burst (Recharge 5-6). Lugaw releases a cloud of golden pollen in a 20-foot radius. Each creature of her choice in the area must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw, taking 27 (6d8) poison damage on a failed save and falling unconscious for 1 minute (a creature wakes if it takes damage or another creature uses an action to shake it), or half as much damage and no unconsciousness on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Grasping Roots (Reaction). When a creature Lugaw can see within 30 ft. moves away from an ally, she causes roots to erupt. The creature must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be restrained until the end of its next turn.

A radiant diwata crowned in living jade hair, she walks barefoot through grasses that bloom at her passing, a flowering staff in one hand and mercy in the other.

Verdant Bond (signature). While within 20 ft. of you, Lugaw shares your resistance to poison damage. When you would drop to 0 hit points, Lugaw can choose to drop to 0 instead, and you remain at 1 hit point (once per long rest).

Actions

Thorned Vine. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) piercing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 14).

Reactions

Blooming Mend. When an ally you can see within 20 ft. takes damage, Lugaw can spend its reaction to grant that ally 5 (1d6+2) temporary hit points.

A lesser grove-sprite woven of vine and petal, Lugaw trails the diwata like a loyal hound made of springtime, shielding the kind and ensnaring the cruel.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with Grasping Roots on the first runner so your front line can hold, then chip with the staff. If the party clusters, save Pollen Burst for the cleric or wizard to drop them unconscious. Pair her with a forest beast or another diwata; she is a healer-controller, not a closer.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP19d8+38 (123) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open by marking the squishiest PC for Pollen Burst the instant two or more cluster within 20 ft. Use Blossoming Renewal each round on whichever ally is lowest, and Grasping Roots to lock a striker off your backline healer. Kill-priority against the party is anyone trying to silence or grapple her; she wants to keep moving and topping up minions, so run her behind a bruiser.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP26d8+78 (195) To-hit+9Save DC17

Field her as the lair's healing engine beside a bigger threat: she keeps the boss and its minions standing while Grasping Roots peels off divers. Open Pollen Burst on the densest cluster, then never stop the per-turn Blossoming Renewal. Pair her with a heavier flagship; on her own a four-PC party simply burns her down, so she needs bodies between her and the front.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Lugaw?

Her home build is CR 6 (2,300 XP), tuned for a party of levels 5-10. Scaled stat lines are provided for tiers 1-4 (CR ~2) and 11-15 (CR ~11); the traits and actions stay identical and only the numbers shift.

Can Lugaw be a companion or ally?

Yes. As a neutral-good diwata she makes a natural patron or guide for druids, rangers, and any party that protects the wild. For a player-side bond, use her companion Maya, Bound — a grove-sprite that shares poison resistance, grapples enemies, and can take a killing blow for its bonded character once per long rest.

Is Lugaw a boss or an add-on?

An add-on. She lacks a true solo action-economy kit, so a four-PC party out-actions her alone. Run her as the healing and control backbone of an encounter, behind a frontline bruiser or beside a heavier flagship threat in her grove or lair.
