Lythari — The Encounter

Sallow-Skinned Reaver of the Outer Void · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Lythari

Among the marauder-bands that ride the empty roads between worlds, the reavers are the duelists set at the front of the raid. Folk who survived their passing speak of a sallow, almost gilded skin and eyes that hold no warmth, of a swordwork so precise it seems rehearsed against the dead. The keening blade she carries is no ordinary steel; it whispers, and those who hear it report headaches, forgotten names, and the slow conviction that their own thoughts are being read aloud. She fights as a fencer fights, never overcommitting, turning every clumsy lunge against its owner with a counterstroke before the attacker has recovered. The buckler is half weapon, half wall: a spiked iron disc she slams to break a foe's footing. Her people prize discipline and cruelty in equal measure, and a reaver who returns without trophies returns in disgrace. She would sooner die on a stranger's road than carry that shame home across the void.

Void-Honed Duelist. While wielding a melee weapon in one hand and nothing in the other (or only a shield), the reaver gains a +2 bonus to its AC against the first attack from each creature on a turn (included above).

Astral Reflexes. If the reaver is subjected to an effect that lets it make a Dexterity saving throw to take only half damage, it instead takes no damage on a success and half on a failure.

Actions

Multiattack. The reaver makes two Silver Longsword attacks and one Buckler Bash attack.

Silver Longsword. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (1d8+4 plus 1d6) slashing damage, and the target takes 5 (2d4) psychic damage as the keening edge feeds on its thoughts.

Buckler Bash. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6+4) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Riposte (Reaction). When a creature the reaver can see misses it with a melee attack, the reaver makes one Silver Longsword attack against that creature.

A sallow-skinned, copper-haired warrior poised in a low fencing stance, a keening longsword raised in one hand and a spiked iron buckler braced in the other, blood-red sash trailing from her hip.

Mind-Eater Blade (signature). While you wield Lythari, your melee weapon attacks deal an extra 1d6 psychic damage, and you have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened.

Actions

Whispering Slash. Melee Weapon Attack: your attack bonus, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 1d8 slashing plus 1d6 psychic damage; the target can't take reactions until the start of its next turn.

Reactions

Cutting Counter. When an adjacent creature misses you with a melee attack, you may deal 1d6 psychic damage to it as the blade sings.

A captured void-blade, ever murmuring, that bonds to a worthy duelist and turns a fencer's parry into a punishing answer.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open with a single Silver Longsword on the squishiest melee-range PC, then back off using Riposte to punish whoever steps in. Hold Buckler Bash to drop a charging frontliner prone and split them from the casters. Pair her with a few skirmisher minions so the party can't simply dogpile.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP16d8+48 (120) To-hit+7Save DC14

Open by dueling the party's best melee striker one-on-one; Riposte makes attacking her costly, so she wants single combat. Kill-priority is any caster within her 30-ft. reach over two turns. Use Buckler Bash to knock a runner prone, then full Multiattack the prone target. She is an add-on, not a boss: deploy her as the blade-captain guarding a bigger threat or in a lair with reaver minions.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP23d8+92 (196) To-hit+9Save DC16

Lead a raid-band of void marauders with her as the front-line duelist who locks down the party's striker. Riposte plus a wall of minions means PCs bleed for every swing. Pair her with a bigger threat (a planar caster or an aberrant horror) and let her tie up melee while it works; she is not meant to fight a tier-3 party alone.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Lythari?

Her native tier is 2 (levels 5-10), built at CR 6 (2,300 XP): AC 16, 120 HP, +7 to hit, save DC 14. Scaled tiers are provided for level 1-4 and 11-15 tables, but she is an add-on adversary, not a solo boss.

Can Lythari be a companion or ally?

Not directly, but her weapon can. The companion block, Keening Edge (Bound), lets a PC or allied NPC wield the whispering void-blade: it grants extra psychic damage, a defensive counter, and resistance to charm and fear. Use it as a reward, a parley outcome, or a recovered relic.

Why isn't she a spellcaster despite the 'astral' flavor?

The render shows no casting implements, focus, or somatic posture, only a sword and a spiked buckler in a fencer's stance, so she is statted as a martial duelist. Her psychic edge is a property of the keening blade, not innate spellcasting.
