Mister Snizzles — The Encounter

The Writhing Idol of the Drowned Cities · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Mister Snizzles

In the grimoires of the drowned cities, Mister Snizzles is named the Writhing Idol — a thing that crawled up from beneath Sodom's wells in the nights before the fire. The pious say it was not a demon but a hunger that wore a demon's shape, settling into the temples once the prayers there curdled into greed. Its mantled skull bristles with eyes that never all close at once, and the many tentacles that fan from its trunk end not in suckers but in small fanged heads, each whispering a private blasphemy. The crystal that crowns it is no jewel but a frozen scream, and those it seizes hear that scream until their own thoughts fall silent. Scholars warn that it does not conquer; it accretes, gathering the broken and the desperate into a court of the maddened. Where it nests, the stones forget which gods they once honored, and travelers report hearing static where there should be silence.

Many-Eyed Vigilance. Mister Snizzles can't be surprised while it has at least one eye open, and it has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight. Attacks made against it from a flanked position gain no advantage.

Writhing Crown. Signature. The crystalline horn atop its mantle pulses with sickly light. At the start of each of its turns, each creature that is grappled by Mister Snizzles must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or be unable to take reactions until the start of its next turn, its mind flooded with whispering static.

Actions

Multiattack. Mister Snizzles makes three Tentacle attacks. It can replace one with a use of Psychic Lash (if available).

Tentacle. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) bludgeoning damage, and if the target is Large or smaller it is grappled (escape DC 15). Mister Snizzles has many tentacles, each of which can grapple only one target.

Psychic Lash. Ranged Spell Attack: +6 to hit, range 60 ft., one creature. Hit: 14 (4d6) psychic damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on its next attack roll.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Constricting Drag. Reaction. When a creature grappled by Mister Snizzles tries to move away, it can pull that creature up to 10 feet toward it and deal 7 (2d6) bludgeoning damage.

A hunched horror of slate-grey carapace crowned by a flat, mantled skull, Mister Snizzles waves a forest of purple tentacles tipped with snapping, fanged maws while a single crystal horn weeps violet light over the rubble of fallen cities.

Tethered Mind (signature). While within 30 feet of its bound ally, the Lesser Idol shares any Wisdom saving throw result the ally rolls, using whichever total is higher.

Actions

Lash. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d4+4) bludgeoning damage plus 3 (1d6) psychic damage.

Reactions

Whisper-Ward. Reaction. When an ally it can see within 30 feet fails a saving throw against being frightened or charmed, the Lesser Idol can let that ally reroll, lashing out telepathically.

A smaller spawn of the idol, all flailing limbs and half-formed eyes, kept docile only while its parent's whispers reach it.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+24 (60) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open at range with Psychic Lash to soften the loudest spellcaster, then wade in and grapple. If foes cluster in a doorway, grab the front-liner and drag them off the rest. Pair it with cultist add-ons so it always has bodies to hide behind.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP12d10+60 (126) To-hit+7Save DC14

Open by grappling the melee anchor and using Writhing Crown to lock down their reactions, then drag them away from the healer. Kill-priority is whoever can break grapples or teleport allies free. Pairs perfectly as a lair-guardian beside a bigger flagship boss; alone it controls but doesn't burst.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP18d10+108 (207) To-hit+9Save DC16

Throw it down with minions or in its temple-lair so the grapple chains matter. Open by seizing two PCs at once and Constricting Drag to keep them split. Pair it with a bigger threat — by this tier it is a battlefield-controller add-on, not the centerpiece, so let it lock down marks while the real boss deals the damage.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Mister Snizzles?

Its home stat block is CR 6 (Tier 2, levels 5-10) at 2,300 XP. The sheet also scales down to a ~CR 2 build for Tier 1 parties and up to a ~CR 11 build for Tier 3, with identical traits and only the numbers shifting.

Can Mister Snizzles be a companion or ally?

It is built as an adversary, but its bound spawn, the Lesser Idol, makes a usable ally companion (AC 14, 75 HP) that shares saving throws and wards nearby friends against fear and charm. A DM could also run the idol itself as a reluctant patron-monster if a party strikes a bargain with it.

Is Mister Snizzles a solo boss?

No. It has no legendary actions and lacks a punishing reaction kit, so a four-player party will out-act it over a round. Run it as a control-focused add-on paired with a bigger flagship threat, a lair, or a pack of lesser-idol minions.
