Morvhan — The Encounter

Antler-crowned warlock who trades whispers for witch-fire · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Morvhan

They say Morvhan was a hedge-scholar who went into the antlered wood to die and came back wearing a crown of bone he refuses to remove. Whatever spoke to him beneath the oaks did not give its name; it gave only conditions. Now the whisper lives behind his eyes, and the antlers grow a finger's width each season, feeding on the wills of those he burns. He keeps to crossroads and abandoned shrines, trading prophecy and witch-fire to desperate folk for memories they will not miss until they are gone. The flame that answers his open hand is not his own — it is borrowed, and the debt compounds. Those who hire him learn too late that the bargain has a third party at the table, and that the antlered thing in the dark counts every coin twice. Morvhan smiles when he casts; it is the only part of him still entirely human, and even that is fading.

Pact of the Antlered Whisperer. Once per turn, when Morvhan reduces a creature to 0 hit points or scores a critical hit with a spell, he gains 10 temporary hit points and may immediately move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks, as the antlers on his crown drink the fallen will.

Witch-Fire Channeler. Morvhan's staff and his open palm both burn with bound flame. His fire spells ignore fire resistance, and a creature that ends its turn within 5 feet of him while he is wreathed in flame (see Eldritch Conflagration) takes 3 (1d6) fire damage.

Actions

Multiattack. Morvhan casts Eldritch Blast twice, or makes one Witch-Staff attack and casts Eldritch Blast once.

Eldritch Blast. Ranged Spell Attack: +7 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (4d8) force damage, and the target is pushed 10 feet away from Morvhan.

Witch-Staff. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d8+4) bludgeoning damage plus 7 (2d6) fire damage.

Eldritch Conflagration (Recharge 5-6). Morvhan hurls a sphere of clinging witch-fire at a point within 60 feet. Each creature in a 15-foot-radius sphere must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 24 (7d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. Until the start of his next turn, Morvhan is wreathed in flame (see Witch-Fire Channeler).

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Hex of the Wild Hunt (Reaction). When a creature Morvhan can see within 60 feet hits him with an attack, he points his palm and the attacker must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened of Morvhan until the end of its next turn.

A gaunt human in storm-blue robes and a hood, crowned with a rack of stag antlers, one hand cupping a teardrop of orange flame while a fire-tipped staff blazes in the other. He stands braced as if mid-incantation, drawing on a bargain older than the wood.

Patron's Tether (signature). While within 60 feet of Morvhan, the wisp shares his fire resistance, and the first time each round Morvhan takes damage, the wisp may take half of it instead.

Actions

Searing Mote. Ranged Spell Attack: +5 to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (3d6) fire damage.

Reactions

Guttering Flare. When a creature within 10 feet hits the wisp, it flares; the attacker must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or be blinded until the end of its next turn.

A drifting knot of orange witch-fire shaped vaguely like a stag's skull, the leash by which the patron keeps Morvhan honest.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC13HP8d8 (36) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open from range with Eldritch Blast and kite behind cover; he is fragile in melee. If the party clusters, save Eldritch Conflagration for two or more in the blast. Pair him with a frontline brute so he never has to take a hit himself.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC15HP20d8+20 (110) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open by hexing the hardest-hitting PC with Hex of the Wild Hunt, then double Eldritch Blast to push melee threats off ledges or away from allies. Drop Eldritch Conflagration the instant two or more PCs bunch up, then stand in the flame so the wreath punishes anyone who closes. Kill-priority: he is a glass cannon, so screen him with minions and make the party spend a turn reaching him.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP26d8+78 (195) To-hit+9Save DC17

Lead with Conflagration on the densest cluster, then alternate blasts to peel the party apart. Use Pact of the Antlered Whisperer kills to teleport-step out of melee and reset range. Do not run him alone here; pair him with a bigger threat or a lair of antlered thralls so the party can't simply dogpile the squishy caster.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Morvhan?

Morvhan is CR 6 (2,300 XP) at his native Tier 2 build: AC 15, 110 HP, +7 to hit, save DC 15. The card also gives Tier 1 (~CR 2) and Tier 3 (~CR 11) versions; the traits stay identical, only the numbers move.

Can Morvhan be a companion or ally?

Yes. As a witch-fire artillery ally he is excellent but fragile, so keep him behind the party. His bound Antler-Wisp companion (AC 13, 36 HP) shoots searing motes and can soak half of his incoming damage, making him viable as a hireling-prophet who fights at the PCs' side.

Is Morvhan a solo boss?

No. He is a centerpiece spellcaster but lacks the action-economy kit (legendary actions, lair tools) to hold a fight alone against four PCs. Run him with minions, thralls, or paired with a bigger threat — a four-person party will out-act a lone caster and bury him fast.
