Overlord Irontyrant
Overlord Irontyrant — The Encounter
The Forge-Crowned Colossus, a warlord wrought of living iron · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Overlord Irontyrant
They name him the Forge-Crowned, for no man has seen flesh beneath the iron, and many doubt any remains. The smiths of a drowned dominion are said to have poured a conqueror's hatred into a body of living metal, sealing his will within plate that never cools and a halberd that never blunts. Where he marches, the earth rings like an anvil; gates buckle, walls weep molten seams, and the survivors swear the iron itself breathes. He suffers no rival upon a throne and no flame upon his frame, drinking fire as a lesser thing drinks water and returning it as a furnace returns the smith's careless hand. To bind such a thing is to chain a foundry mid-pour. He does not parley, does not tire, and does not forgive a closed door. The old grimoires counsel one mercy only against the Forge-Crowned: do not let him reach you, for his reach is long and his patience is iron.
Run Overlord Irontyrant in Sixty Seconds
- Never dump fire on it. Forge-Heated Frame heals it for half and lights it up to burn everyone adjacent — tell your blaster to switch to cold, force, or radiant.
- Open with Iron Surge. The 20-ft cone prones and softens the cluster before the party can spread; then Multiattack the highest-damage PC.
- Kill-priority is reach and movement. Crushing Weight and Grinding Advance mean front-line walls don't protect the casters — it walks through bodies, so screen with terrain, not meat.
- When bloodied, lean on the legendary kit. Alternate Halberd Sweep and Stoke the Forge, and let Tyrant's Reprisal tax anyone who steps into the 10-ft reach.
- Three ways to run it: solo anvil-boss (legendary kit, band as written); warlord-with-thralls (add iron minions, drop legendary actions); or siege engine (turn it loose on a gate/wall with Siege Engine and let the party race a clock).
Overlord Irontyrant
Large construct, lawful evil
CR 9 · 5,000 XP · GUIDELINEForge-Heated Frame. When the Overlord takes fire damage, it instead heals half that amount and its body glows white-hot until the start of its next turn. While glowing, any creature that ends its turn within 5 feet of the Overlord, or hits it with a melee attack, takes 7 (2d6) fire damage.
Crushing Weight. The Overlord ignores difficult terrain and can move through the space of any creature of its size or smaller, knocking it prone if the creature fails a DC 16 Strength saving throw.
Siege Engine. The Overlord deals double damage to objects and structures.
Actions
Multiattack. The Overlord makes two attacks with its forge-halberd.
Forge-Halberd. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (2d10+6) slashing damage plus 7 (2d6) fire damage. On a critical hit, the target is knocked prone.
Iron Surge (Recharge 5-6). The Overlord stamps the ground and slams its halberd down in a 20-foot cone of shattering iron. Each creature in that area must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw, taking 35 (10d6) bludgeoning damage and being knocked prone on a failed save, or half as much damage and not knocked prone on a success.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Tyrant's Reprisal. When a creature the Overlord can see moves within its reach or makes an attack against it, the Overlord can make one Forge-Halberd attack against that creature in retaliation. It can use this reaction once per round.
Legendary Actions (3/Round)
Halberd Sweep (Costs 1 Action). The Overlord makes one Forge-Halberd attack.
Grinding Advance. The Overlord moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks. The first creature it passes within 5 feet of must succeed on a DC 16 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Stoke the Forge (Costs 2 Actions). The Overlord's frame flares white-hot. Each creature within 10 feet must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw, taking 14 (4d6) fire damage on a failure or half as much on a success.
A towering tyrant sealed inside wrought blue-and-gold war-plate, its horned helm barred like a furnace grate, wielding a double-bladed forge-halberd longer than a man is tall.
Overlord Irontyrant, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEBellows Heart (signature). At the start of each of its turns, Overlord Irontyrant can choose one ally within 30 feet; that ally's next weapon attack this round deals an extra 4 (1d8) fire damage.
Actions
Molten Maul. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) bludgeoning damage plus 4 (1d8) fire damage.
Reactions
Quench Ward. When an ally it can see within 10 feet takes fire damage, Overlord Irontyrant can reduce that damage by 10 (2d6+3) by drawing the heat into its own frame.
A squat, soot-blackened forge-thrall that tends the Overlord's furnace-heart and stokes the war-host's blades to molten edge.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with Iron Surge into the tightest knot of heroes, then wade in and full-attack the front-liner. With minions or a lair, let weaker iron-thralls screen the flanks while the Overlord grinds the line. Pair it with a bigger threat if you want a true climax; on its own it is a brutal mid-fight wall.
Lead with Grinding Advance to bowl past skirmishers and reach the casters, then Multiattack the squishiest target. Save Iron Surge for when three or more are clustered. Kill-priority is anyone hiding behind cover — Crushing Weight lets it walk right through the meat shields.
As a solo boss, open with Iron Surge to scatter and prone the party, then Multiattack the deadliest striker. Spend legendary actions on Stoke the Forge when melee piles in and Halberd Sweep otherwise; Tyrant's Reprisal punishes anyone who moves into reach. Bait fire onto it at your peril — Forge-Heated Frame turns blasters into healers.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Overlord Irontyrant?
Its home build is CR 9 (Tier 3, levels 11-15) as a solo boss with a full legendary-action kit; the band is dropped one step from baseline CR 11 precisely because that action economy lets it play up against a four-PC party. The included Tier 1 and Tier 2 lines re-stat the identical traits for ~CR 2 and ~CR 6 tables.
Can Overlord Irontyrant be a companion or ally?
Not the Overlord himself — he is a conqueror who suffers no master. But his forge-thrall, Cinderwright, can be bound to a party as an ally: a soot-black furnace-tender that buffs allied weapons with fire (Bellows Heart) and soaks incoming flame (Quench Ward) while swinging a molten maul.
How do I keep my players from accidentally healing it?
Telegraph it. Have the iron flare white-hot the first time fire touches it and describe the wounds sealing — one round of warning saves the encounter from feeling like a gotcha. After that, reward the party for pivoting to cold, force, bludgeoning, or radiant damage, all of which land normally.
