Pascual — The Encounter

Horned reaver who rides a bone-maned steed of the grave · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Pascual

They call him Pascual the Pale Rider, though no parish would baptize so grim a name. The grimoires hold that he was a champion thrown down in a war his lords abandoned, who clawed his way back through the cold mouth of the grave wearing the helm-horns of his own pride. His steed is no living horse but a thing dug from the same barrow as its master, its skull crowned with curling horn, its mane a banner of pale corpse-light, its barding fused from the rib-plates of those it has trampled. Where the two of them ride, the soil sours and the dead grow restless, and they say the glaive he carries was quenched not in oil but in the blood of an oathbreaker. He answers to older powers still, riding at the vanguard of a greater darkness, his charge the herald that scatters the brave before the true terror arrives.

Charnel Charge. Signature. If Pascual moves at least 20 ft. straight toward a target while mounted and then hits it with his glaive on the same turn, the target takes an extra 9 (2d8) necrotic damage and must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. While prone, the target has disadvantage on saves against being frightened by Pascual until the start of his next turn.

Dread Reaver. When Pascual reduces a creature to 0 hit points with a melee attack, each enemy within 15 ft. of him that can see the kill must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened of him until the end of its next turn.

Actions

Multiattack. Pascual makes two attacks with his reaping glaive.

Reaping Glaive. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d6 + 4) slashing damage plus 4 (1d8) necrotic damage.

Grave Sentence (Recharge 5-6). Pascual sweeps the glaive in a wide reaping arc. Each creature in a 10-foot-radius around him must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw, taking 18 (4d8) necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. A creature that fails by 5 or more is also frightened of him until the end of its next turn.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Reaping Backswing (Reaction). When a creature within 10 ft. of Pascual stands up from prone or enters his reach, he can make one Reaping Glaive attack against it.

A horned, plate-clad reaver sits astride a bone-plated steed whose ghost-white mane streams like grave-smoke, his bloodied glaive raised over a field of tusks and shattered skulls.

Trampling Surge (signature). The steed can move through the space of any creature one size smaller than it. The first time it enters a hostile creature's space on its turn, that creature must succeed on a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw or take 7 (2d6) bludgeoning damage and fall prone.

Actions

Goring Skull. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 3) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) necrotic damage.

Reactions

Carry the Rider. When its rider is hit by an attack, the steed can rear and interpose its barding, granting the rider +2 AC against that attack. If the attack still hits, the steed takes the damage instead.

A barrow-born warhorse of horn and bone, its corpse-light mane casting no warmth, bound to its rider until both are unmade.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP6d10+12 (45) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open with the Charnel Charge so the first kill triggers Dread Reaver and scatters the line. Keep him mounted and mobile, riding past clustered low-level PCs and using Grave Sentence on the recharge. Kill-priority is whoever holds the party together; pair him with a couple of skeletal foot-soldiers so the party can't simply gang the rider.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC17HP14d10+42 (119) To-hit+7Save DC14

Open with a 20+ ft. Charnel Charge into the squishiest caster to knock prone and seed fear, then Multiattack. When clustered, blow Grave Sentence; otherwise ride out of reach and re-charge each round using the steed's 50 ft. speed. Kill-priority: healers and concentration-casters. He is an add-on, not a solo — pair him with a bigger flagship boss so his charge softens the party before the main threat lands.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP22d10+88 (209) To-hit+9Save DC16

Run him as the cavalry vanguard of a lair or a larger darkness: charge in turn one to knock down the front rank and break morale, then reap. When the party clusters to burst him, punish with Grave Sentence and Reaping Backswing on anyone repositioning. Kill-priority remains the casters; do NOT field him alone — he is meant to ride ahead of a heavier threat and pair with minions or a flagship boss.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Pascual?

His native build is CR 6 (2,300 XP), tuned for a party of levels 5-10. The Tier 1 (levels 1-4) and Tier 3 (levels 11-15) columns rescale his AC, HP, to-hit, and save DC into those bands while keeping the same traits and actions.

Can Pascual be a companion or ally?

He is built as an adversary, but a grim cavalry champion can absolutely be turned. As an ally he charges first to break enemy lines and scatter morale; just remember the Dread Reaver and Grave Sentence fear effects are friend-blind in a crowded melee.

Is Pascual a solo boss?

No. He has a strong charge-and-fear kit but no legendary actions or punishing every-turn reaction economy, so a four-PC party will out-act him alone. Run him as an add-on: the vanguard rider who softens the party ahead of a flagship boss, or the captain of an undead cavalry unit.
