Ravokh — The Encounter

Owlfolk cutthroat who kills between two silent wingbeats · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Ravokh

The Crimson Elixir grimoires list Ravokh not among the seventy-two sovereign spirits but among their hired knives — an owlfolk of the night roosts who took the contracts the named ones would not soil their hands upon. He learned silence before speech: a fledgling raised in a belfry of poisoners, taught that mercy is a sound, and sound is what gets a killer caught. Those who summon him pay in secrets, never coin, for Ravokh trades only in what cannot be spent twice. He hunts on hushed wings, drops behind the throat, and is gone before the body folds. Hedge-witches whisper that his blades are blessed by no devil at all — that the venom is simply his own, distilled from years of swallowing other people's last words. Where he passes, owls fall silent and dogs will not bark, and the marked never hear the door.

Silent Flight. Ravokh's wingbeats make no sound. He has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made while flying, and creatures have disadvantage on Perception checks that rely on hearing to detect him.

Sneak Attack (1/Turn). Ravokh deals an extra 14 (4d6) damage when he hits a target with a weapon attack and has advantage on the attack, or when the target is within 5 feet of an ally of Ravokh that isn't incapacitated and Ravokh doesn't have disadvantage.

Keen Sight. Ravokh has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.

Actions

Multiattack. Ravokh makes two attacks with his curved daggers.

Curved Dagger. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d4+4) slashing damage plus 7 (2d6) poison damage.

Talon Rake. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d4+4) slashing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Cunning Action (Bonus Action). Ravokh takes the Dash, Disengage, or Hide action, or flies up to half his fly speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Uncanny Dodge (Reaction). When an attacker Ravokh can see hits him with an attack, he halves the attack's damage against him.

A crested owl-headed assassin in red-and-gold lacquered scale and a sweeping cloak, balanced on raptor talons with a poisoned curved dagger held low. He stares without blinking, already deciding where the blade goes.

Spotter's Cry (signature). Once per turn as a bonus action, Ravokh marks a creature it can see within 60 feet. The next ally attack against that creature before the start of Ravokh's next turn has advantage.

Actions

Rending Talons. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) slashing damage.

Reactions

Veer. When a creature Ravokh can see attacks it, Ravokh flies up to 20 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.

A great horned owl-beast that scouts the dark ahead of Ravokh, calling targets with a single low hoot so the killing stroke lands true.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open from hiding for the Sneak Attack, then Cunning Action to fly out of reach. Use Talon Rake to knock the party's caster prone, then carve them with poison daggers. Pair with melee bruisers who keep the front line busy so Ravokh always has an ally adjacent for Sneak Attack.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP17d8+34 (110) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open by flying in silent on the squishiest backliner and unloading Sneak Attack + two poisoned strikes, then Disengage-fly out before they answer. Kill-priority is enemy healers and casters; let Uncanny Dodge eat the burst when they corner him. Best as the assassin in a larger gang or lair, not the headliner.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP27d8+108 (229) To-hit+9Save DC16

Run him as the lieutenant beside a bigger threat: he flits between cover picking off whoever the boss has pinned, always landing Sneak Attack via the marked target. Hit-and-fade every round on silent wings; never trade blows in the open. Pair with a heavy controller or boss so the party can't focus him down.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Ravokh?

Natively CR 6 (Tier 2, levels 5-10): AC 16, 110 HP, +7 to hit, save DC 15. The block scales down to roughly CR 2 for Tier 1 parties and up to about CR 11 for Tier 3 by swapping in the listed numbers; traits and actions stay identical.

Can Ravokh be a companion or ally?

Yes. As a hireling assassin he makes a deadly NPC ally or a treacherous patron's knife — though his price is always paid in secrets, never coin, and he answers only to whoever holds the better leverage. His bound owl-beast Sablewing comes with him.

Is Ravokh a solo boss?

No. He's a strike-and-fade assassin, not a centerpiece — a four-PC party will out-act him once he's spotted. Run him as a lieutenant or ambusher alongside a bigger threat, minions, or a lair so he always has cover and an adjacent ally for Sneak Attack.
