Rosales — The Encounter

Horned reaver who rides a fanged steed over a field of broken swords · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Rosales

They name him Rosales, the Reaper of the Drowned Field, a sworn rider of an infernal legion who collects the weapons of those he kills and plants them in the earth as trophies. The grimoires hold that he was once a mortal champion who bargained his soul for a steed that would never tire and a blade that would never break; the pact warped both. His mount no longer breathes, only hungers, its jaw fanged like a beast's, its eyes lit with cold fire. The greatsword he carries is no longer steel but living muscle and bone, a wound given an edge, and it feeds upon the dying to keep its bearer standing. Where Rosales rides, the ground is left thick with shattered armaments and the marrow of the fallen. He answers to a captain of the burning ranks, charging ahead of the line to break formations and harvest the slow.

Charge. If the mount moves at least 20 ft. straight toward a target and Rosales hits it with the cleaver greatsword on the same turn, the target takes an extra 9 (2d8) slashing damage and must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Carrion Hunger. Signature. Rosales's greatsword is a living wound of red flesh and bone. Whenever Rosales reduces a creature to 0 hit points or scores a critical hit with it, he regains 9 (2d8) hit points as the blade feeds.

Actions

Multiattack. Rosales makes two attacks with his cleaver greatsword. His mount makes one Hooves attack.

Cleaver Greatsword. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) slashing damage plus 4 (1d8) fire damage.

Hurled Blade. Ranged Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) piercing damage. Rosales draws one of the swords planted around his steed.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Trample (Reaction). When a creature within 5 ft. of his mount is knocked prone, Rosales can command the steed to make one Hooves attack against that creature.

A horned reaver in battered plate sits astride a rearing, hollow-eyed warhorse with a fanged maw, brandishing a serrated greatsword whose blade is raw red sinew. Beneath the hooves lies a churned field of bone shards and the planted swords of the slain.

Actions

Hooves. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) bludgeoning damage.

Reactions

Veer. When the steed or its rider is hit by an attack, the steed can impose disadvantage on that attack roll by surging aside; if the attack then misses, the steed may move up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

A hollow-eyed warhorse with a predator's fanged maw, never resting, never sated, carrying its master into the thickest of the slaughter.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP6d10+18 (51) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open with a Charge into the softest body, knocking it prone, then ride past so the party must chase. Pair him with a bigger threat or a pack of foot soldiers; let the mount's speed deny the melee characters a clean turn. Kill-priority: drop the rider and the steed becomes a manageable beast.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP15d10+45 (127) To-hit+7Save DC14

Open with a 60 ft. mounted Charge into a clustered backline, knock the target prone, then Trample it with the reaction. Carrion Hunger means finishing low targets heals him, so feed him stragglers last. Pair Rosales with a bigger threat or his legion minions; with terrain to run, he is a relentless flanking hammer that never wants to stand still.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d10+80 (190) To-hit+9Save DC16

Run him as the cavalry of a lair or warhost, charging in from a flank while a captain holds the center. Use the planted swords for Hurled Blade when ranged characters kite, and Charge the casters to break concentration. He is an add-on shock-trooper, not a lone act; with minions to pin the party he carves a lane and feeds the whole fight.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Rosales?

Rosales is built at CR 6 (Tier 2, levels 5-10) in his native band: AC 16, 127 HP, +7 to hit, save DC 14. Tier 1 and Tier 3 stat columns are provided to scale him to CR 2 or roughly CR 11 without changing his traits or actions.

Can Rosales be a companion or ally?

Rosales himself is a lawful evil fiend and reads as an adversary, but his Fanged Steed is statted as a bound companion (AC 14, 76 HP) with the Tireless trait and a Veer reaction, so a party that defeats or frees Rosales could claim the mount.

Is Rosales a solo boss?

No. He is an elite add-on cavalier with no legendary actions, so a full party will out-act him alone. Run him alongside a flagship boss, a captain, or a unit of minions, and let his mounted speed and Charge make him the shock-trooper that breaks formation.
