Rosmar
Rosmar — The Encounter
The Weeping Infant of the Roadside, a Filipino folklore changeling · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Rosmar
Travelers on lonely Filipino roads learn never to follow a child's crying after dark. Rosmar wears the shape of a foundling babe, soft and helpless, its wail pitched to break the hardest heart. Those who gather it up feel the weight wrong in their arms, the skin too cold, before the little mouth splits wide with teeth and the belly yawns open like a wound that never healed. It is a changeling thing, born of grief soured into hunger, drawn to mothers, midwives, and the soft-hearted. By day it lies still as carrion among the reeds; by night it scuttles low to the ground, mimicking the voices of the lost to draw the living off the path. Folk hang garlic, salt, and turned-out clothing to confuse it, for the creature is easily baffled by anything reversed or unexpected. It rarely strikes a wary band; it preys on the one who breaks away to help.
Run Rosmar in Sixty Seconds
- Hold for the helper. Rosmar opens curled and crying; let one PC approach, then take the advantage attack from False Innocence and latch on with Bite.
- Kill-priority is the isolated PC. It exists to split the party with Luring Cry (DC 12 Wis) and feed on whoever breaks away to help.
- When bloodied, it runs. Use Scuttle every round to Disengage into cover; it is a hit-and-fade ambusher, not a brawler.
- Three ways to run it: roadside trap (still until touched), pack of lurkers in a haunted thicket, or a herald that lures the party toward a bigger horror.
- Counterplay to telegraph: reverse a garment, scatter salt, or simply spot the wrong weight (DC 14 Insight) and the illusion of innocence breaks.
Rosmar
Small fiend (shapechanger), neutral evil
CR 2 · 450 XP · GUIDELINELuring Cry. Signature. The creature can mimic the wail of a lost infant or a familiar voice it has heard. A creature that hears the cry and cannot see the source must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom save or move toward the sound on its next turn, ending no closer than 5 feet if that would put it in obvious danger. A creature that succeeds is immune to this creature's Luring Cry for 24 hours.
False Innocence. While motionless and curled small, the creature is indistinguishable from a real abandoned child (DC 14 Insight to discern the truth). The first attack it makes after a creature approaches within 5 ft. has advantage.
Actions
Multiattack. The creature makes two Claw attacks.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (2d4+2) slashing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution save or take 3 (1d6) necrotic damage as the wound festers.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 6 (1d8+2) piercing damage. If the target is Medium or smaller and the creature has not used its reaction this round, the creature can latch on, gaining advantage on Bite attacks against that target while attached.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Scuttle. Bonus Action. The creature takes the Disengage or Hide action, scrambling on all fours into cover or under a foe.
A grotesque infant with pointed ears, a fanged grin, and clawed hands, its swollen belly torn open over a slick mound of viscera. It waits on the roadside as a weeping baby until a kind hand comes near.
Rosmar, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEPitiful Wail (signature). As an action, the bound creature cries out. One enemy within 30 ft. that can hear it must succeed on a DC 11 Wisdom save or have disadvantage on its next attack roll, hesitating at the sound.
Actions
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d4+3) slashing damage.
Reactions
Skittering Hide. When a creature ends its turn within 5 ft., the bound creature can move up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks and attempt to hide.
Coaxed from the roadside with salt and a true name, it follows like a shadow, useful so long as it is never left alone with the wounded.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open by lying still as a weeping infant and let one PC approach, then strike with advantage and latch on with Bite. Use Scuttle to slip under the party and split them; kill-priority is the lone helper who broke from the group. Pair it with a den of similar lurkers or a larger nightmare to lead the heroes off the safe road.
Open with Luring Cry to peel a single PC into the dark, then ambush with Bite-and-latch. Disengage with Scuttle the instant it is focused; it dies fast in the open, so keep it skirmishing from cover. Best as an add-on harrier alongside a tougher horror that punishes the isolated.
Run it as one of several lurkers seeding a haunted-road lair, never alone in the open against high-level PCs. Lead with Luring Cry to scatter the formation, latch onto the squishiest target, and Scuttle away when bloodied. Pair it with a bigger threat that capitalizes on the split party.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Rosmar?
Rosmar is built at CR 2 (450 XP) in its native Tier 1 band: AC 13, 49 HP, +4 to hit, save DC 12. Scale it up using the Tier 2 (CR 6) or Tier 3 (CR 11) rows, which keep the same traits and only move the numbers.
Can Rosmar be a companion or ally?
Yes. Use the Rosmar, Bound companion profile (AC 12, 29 HP) for a creature coaxed off the roadside with salt and its true name. Its Pitiful Wail can sap an enemy's attack, but it is treacherous and should never be left alone with the wounded.
Is Rosmar safe to use without IP concerns?
Yes. Rosmar is framed through public-domain Filipino folklore, the weeping changeling infant of lonely roadsides, and uses only generic SRD 5.1 mechanics and creature types (fiend, shapechanger). No proprietary names, cosmology, or Product Identity is referenced.
