Xyron — The Encounter

Horned cinder-priest who reads omens in burning bone · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Xyron

Where lesser devils tally souls, Xyron reads them. He is named in the marginalia of the Lesser Key as a lawful spirit of the burning order, a priest of the infernal hierarchy who divines fortune in the cracking of heated bone. Petitioners who climb to his ash-strewn shrine bring a skull and a question; he heats it on his staff until it splits, and in the pattern of the fissures he speaks an omen that has never once proven false, though it has often proven fatal. The flames that gnaw his cloak never consume it, for he long ago bargained the fire of his own damnation into a servant. Scholars of the seventy-two spirits warn that Xyron does not lie and does not bargain in his own favor; he simply tells the truth in the cruelest order the words allow, and lets the seeker walk willingly into it. Cults raise him braziers and feed them the teeth of the faithless.

Magic Resistance. Xyron has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Cinder Augury. Signature. Once per turn, when Xyron sees a creature within 60 ft. roll a d20, he may read the omen in his burning staff and force that creature to reroll, taking the lower of the two results. He then takes 3 (1d6) fire damage as the embers gutter.

Actions

Multiattack. Xyron makes two attacks with his Hellfire Staff, or casts a spell and makes one Hellfire Staff attack.

Hellfire Staff. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) bludgeoning damage plus 7 (2d6) fire damage.

Ember Lance. Ranged Spell Attack: +7 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (4d8) fire damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be unable to regain hit points until the end of its next turn.

Bone Choir (Recharge 5-6). Xyron strikes the skulls at his feet and they scream. Each creature within a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on a point Xyron can see within 60 ft. must make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw, taking 24 (7d6) psychic damage on a failed save and becoming frightened of Xyron until the end of its next turn, or half as much damage and not frightened on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Ashen Step. Bonus Action. Xyron vanishes in a puff of cinders and teleports up to 30 ft. to an unoccupied space he can see.

Smoldering Ward. Reaction. When Xyron takes damage from a creature within 30 ft., he wreathes himself in flame; the attacker takes 7 (2d6) fire damage.

A horned, red-skinned cinder-priest crouches amid a litter of skulls, one fist clenched around a barbed staff that drips living flame, his spiked black pauldron and tattered ember-cloak still smoking from the last rite.

Omen-Touched (signature). Once per turn, when an ally Xyron can see within 30 ft. hits with an attack, Xyron may add 4 (1d8) fire damage to the hit as cinders flare across the wound.

Actions

Brand-Whip. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d10+4) slashing damage plus 4 (1d8) fire damage.

Reactions

Read the Cinders. Reaction. When a creature within 30 ft. of Xyron makes a saving throw, she may grant it advantage on that throw as she whispers the next line of the omen.

A scarred acolyte chained to Xyron's service, carrying the brazier and reciting the omens she is forbidden to understand.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+24 (60) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with Ember Lance on the party's healer so they can't be patched up, then fall back behind cover. If the party clusters, hold Bone Choir for the moment three or more stand inside the 20-foot sphere. Pair Xyron with a melee bruiser or a knot of cultists; he is a ranged controller, not a frontliner.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP13d8+65 (123) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open with Ember Lance on the cleric or bard to shut off healing, then Cinder Augury the round's biggest d20 (the rogue's attack, a save-or-suck spell). Kill-priority: ignore the tank, punish the squishy casters; use Ashen Step to break melee and Bone Choir when bodies bunch. Best fielded beside a bigger frontline threat or his own cultist mob.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d8+120 (210) To-hit+9Save DC17

Run him as the ranged brain of a warband or lair fight, never alone. Open Ember Lance + Bone Choir on the clumped party, then Ashen Step out of reach each round and let minions hold the line. Pair him with a heavier melee boss or summoned devils; his Cinder Augury and Smoldering Ward make any martial that closes on him bleed.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Xyron?

Xyron is built at CR 6 (2,300 XP) in his native Tier 2 form, a fair spotlight threat for a party of levels 5-10. Scaled stat blocks for Tier 1 (levels 1-4) and Tier 3 (levels 11-15) are provided so you can drop him into almost any table.

Can Xyron be a companion or ally?

Not Xyron himself; he is a devil who bargains only in his own favor. His bound acolyte Vessa is provided as a companion stat block (AC 14, 74 HP) who can ride along with a party that frees or co-opts her, lending omen-touched fire damage and a save-granting reaction.

Is Xyron a boss or an add-on?

An add-on. He has no legendary actions and is meant to fight beside a bigger threat or his own cultist mob; field him as the controlling brain of an encounter, not as a lone solo boss.
