Mage · The Whispering Index
Field-caster who carries the living grimoire strapped to his chest — reads its pages one-handed, wand in the other, and keeps its appetite leashed.
The Ladder

What they learn

LV 1
Strapped Close The book cannot be taken, dropped, or lost while bound to you; read from it one-handed.
LV 3
Wand and Page Cast a read spell and hold your ground: no opportunity attacks while you read aloud.
LV 6
Feed It Carefully Direct the Tome's hunger at a chosen document, ward, or rule — precise, not wild.
LV 10
The Index Answers 1/story, ask the living book one question about anything ever written; it answers, at a price it names.
For the Guide

How to run The Bookward

VoiceCareful, watchful, one ear always on the book against his chest.
WantsTo carry the Tome and stay its master. To read its pages without being read by them. To keep it fed and leashed.
Do this nowThe Bookward reads — a spell drawn one-handed from a book that would rather bite.
“(the straps are not for carrying. The straps are so it cannot reach the other pages.)”

The grey-robed keeper who carries the living grimoire bound to his chest — wand in one paw, the Tome's own pages in the other; close cousin to The Fine Print's tradition, but a field-caster where The Fine Print is a reader. Canon open; promoted to the Whispering Index. The straps, he will tell you, are not for carrying.
