For the Guide

How to run The Gatekeeper

VoicePlain, steady, carrying a weight he will not set down. Blocky, honest, kind.
WantsTo spare the town the knowing. To stand the post. To answer the knock without opening.
Do this nowThe Gatekeeper holds the line no one else can — stands between the town and a truth, and takes the weight of it alone.
“Nothing. (said when it is not nothing)”

The novel's quiet spine. He guards the sealed old gate, where something has knocked softly, in threes, from the far side for the whole of his life — and he has told no one, because to tell is to give the burden away. His heroism is carrying a thing so others don't have to. He answers the final knock in code, not by opening. NEVER named, never faced.

Fights best beside — None — and that is the character. He works alone so the town needn't know it needs him.
