The Lore of the Harpist

The Harpist was once Seere’s sense of time — his ability to feel duration, to know how long a moment lasts, to understand the difference between a second and a century. When you move as fast as Seere, time means nothing. An hour is a heartbeat. A year is a blink. There is no difference between yesterday and tomorrow because you are already past both.

The Harpist sits in the Court and plays the hours. Each string of its harp is a unit of time that Seere abandoned. Pluck one, and you hear what a minute sounded like before Seere broke it. Pluck another, and you hear the weight of an hour — how heavy it used to feel when things still moved at mortal speed.

The Harpist does not measure time. It mourns it. It is the only member of the Court that understands loss — because time is the one thing that, once shed, can never be recovered. Every note it plays is an elegy for a second that Seere will never experience.

Role in the Court

The Harpist is the third Custodian — and arguably the most profound. Where the Witness sees what Seere missed and the Bound Choir holds what Seere said, the Harpist holds what Seere felt — the weight of passing time, the texture of duration, the difference between a moment and an eternity.

It is said that those who hear the Harpist’s music age — not in body, but in understanding. They suddenly feel every year they have lived, all at once, and for a moment they know what it costs to move as fast as Seere. Most of them weep. Some of them stop moving entirely, frozen by the weight of the hours they had been ignoring.

The Harpist plays on. It has been playing since the moment Seere shed it. It will play until the last string breaks — and each string is a unit of time, so each string that breaks is a unit of time that ceases to exist. When the last string snaps, time itself will end — at least in the places Seere has passed through.
