The Lore of the Witness

The Custodians are the things Seere set down to see for him. They do not guard — they observe. They are Seere’s abandoned senses, left behind because he was moving too fast to use them.

The Witness was once Seere’s capacity to be present — his ability to observe a moment without rushing past it. A being who crosses the earth in a heartbeat cannot witness anything. Every scene is a blur. Every face is a smear. Every moment is already gone before it registers.

So his witnessing peeled away and stayed behind. Now it stands in the court, seeing everything, saying nothing.

The Witness does not record. It does not report to Seere. It simply watches — because that is all it knows how to do. It is the most terrifying member of the court, because it has seen everything that Seere missed, and it will never tell him.

Role in the Court

The Witness is the first Custodian — the rank that sees for the Prince. Where the Guardians protect concepts and the Heralds announce his passage, the Custodians do something far more intimate: they perceive in his stead.

The Witness has multiple angles, multiple faces, multiple perspectives — because witnessing is not a single point of view. It is all of them at once. To truly see a moment, you must see it from every direction simultaneously. The Witness does this. It always has. It is the most complete observer in the infernal hierarchy — and the most silent.

Those who enter the Witness’s presence report a sudden, overwhelming awareness — the feeling of being truly seen, not judged but comprehended entirely, by something that will never look away.
