Faerie Dragon — The Encounter

Butterfly-winged trickster of the hidden wood · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Faerie Dragon

The smallfolk of the deep wood whisper of the dragonet that is more sprite than serpent — a creature of the hidden glades whose wings bear the lacework of a moth and whose breath is not fire but bewildering mirth. Hunters who follow its dancing lights into the bracken find their minds turned to giddy nonsense, laughing until their quarry slips away unseen. It hoards no gold; instead it collects secrets, riddles, and the bright trinkets of those it has gulled, trading them only for a tale it has never heard. Folk leave it honey and silver bells to win its fickle goodwill, for a faerie dragon that likes you will guide you safely through the bramble-maze, and one that does not will lead you in circles until dawn. It guards the threshold places where the green world thins, mischievous, ancient beyond its small frame, and never, ever to be trusted with a question you fear the answer to.

Innate Spellcasting. The dragon's innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 15). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components: at will — dancing lights, minor illusion; 3/day each — charm person, invisibility; 1/day — confusion.

Euphoria Breath. Signature. The dragon's giddy fey magic warps the senses. When it forces a creature to make a saving throw against its breath or a charm effect, that creature has disadvantage if it can hear the dragon's chiming laughter (within 30 ft. and not deafened).

Gossamer Step. Difficult terrain composed of plants, foliage, or webs costs the dragon no extra movement, and it can hover.

Actions

Multiattack. The dragon makes one Bite attack and one Claw attack. It can replace the Claw with a use of Euphoria Breath if available.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) psychic damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d4+4) slashing damage.

Euphoria Breath (Recharge 5–6). The dragon exhales a shimmer of giddy faerie dust in a 30-foot cone. Each creature there must make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, a creature takes 21 (6d6) psychic damage and falls prone in a fit of helpless laughter, unable to take reactions until the end of its next turn. On a success, it takes half damage and is not affected otherwise.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Flicker (Reaction). When a creature the dragon can see hits it with an attack, the dragon turns momentarily invisible and flies up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks. The attack still resolves; the dragon reappears at the end of the movement.

A lithe, jewel-scaled dragon no larger than a hound, its enormous butterfly wings scrolled with living frost-patterns, balanced atop a long coiling tail. It hovers with a chiming, mocking little laugh.

Twinned Mischief (signature). While within 30 ft. of an ally it has chosen as its bonded companion, Faerie Dragon can use its reaction to grant that ally advantage on a saving throw against being charmed or frightened.

Actions

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (2d4+3) piercing damage plus 3 (1d6) psychic damage.

Reactions

Vanishing Dust. When the bonded ally is hit by an attack, Faerie Dragon scatters faerie dust; the ally turns invisible until the start of its next turn or until it attacks or casts a spell.

A loyal, palm-sized cousin that rides a friend's shoulder and showers foes in confusing glitter.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open invisible, drift behind the cluster, and lead with Euphoria Breath to drop a fit of laughter on two or three PCs. Stay airborne and Flicker away the instant it is struck. Pair it with a melee threat that punishes the prone, laughing victims.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP14d8+56 (119) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open by softening the party with charm person on the front-line tank, then cone the casters with Euphoria Breath while they are clustered. Kill-priority is the party's healer — charm or laugh it out of the fight. When bloodied, go invisible and reposition; it fights to frustrate, not to die. Best run alongside a brute boss as the controller that locks down the room.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d8+100 (190) To-hit+9Save DC17

Use it as a lair controller, not a solo boss — pair it with a bigger threat and let it ride the air. Open with confusion on the bunched melee, then Euphoria Breath the rest; Flicker away from every focused hit. Kill-priority remains the healer, and minions or a flagship adversary should mop up the laughing, prone PCs.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Faerie Dragon?

The home build is CR 6 (Tier 2, levels 5–10): AC 16, 119 HP, +7 to hit, save DC 15. Scale it down to CR ~2 for Tier 1 or up to CR ~11 for Tier 3 using the tier table — the traits and tactics stay the same, only the numbers move.

Can Faerie Dragon be a companion or ally?

Yes — use the included companion, Glimmerfly, Bound (AC 14, 71 HP), a smaller bonded cousin that shields an ally from charm and frighten and hides them in vanishing dust. The full-size dragon also makes a fickle quest-giver who guides (or misleads) the party rather than fighting beside them.

Is the Faerie Dragon a fiend or a true dragon?

Statted as a Medium fey with the dragon subtype — a creature of the hidden wood, more sprite than serpent. Its threat is psychic mischief and control, not fire and brawn, so play it as a trickster that frustrates the party into mistakes.
