Chieftain Liontaurus — The Encounter

Maned War-King of the Pridelands, Standard-Bearer of the Pride · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Chieftain Liontaurus

In the demi-feline kingdom of Fehnaria, the liontaurs are born to lead the prides into battle, and none is feared like the Chieftain. Half man, half lion in the old hybrid fashion of the sphinx-kin, he stands above the Pangcat Lancers and Panthera Warriors as their banner and their wall both. When he plants his fanged standard and roars, every cat-soldier on the field finds courage and every foe finds doubt. He fights as a phalanx unto himself: charging on lion's haunches, goring with his horned standard, then turning that great round shield to break a counterstroke. Old tales hold that the Spirit of Pride itself rides upon the chieftains of Fehnaria, lending them the unbending dignity of beasts that bow to no man. He does not hunt for sport, nor kill for cruelty; he wars only to keep the pridelands whole and his people unbroken beneath the wolf-mercenaries who circle the borders.

Pounce. If the chieftain moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and then hits it with a horns-and-hooves charge or its standard on the same turn, the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. If the target is prone, the chieftain can make one bite attack against it as a bonus action.

Roar of the Pride. (Signature.) When the chieftain raises its war-standard and roars, allied beasts and felisians within 30 feet have advantage on attack rolls until the start of the chieftain's next turn. Enemies that can hear the roar and are within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom save or be frightened until the end of their next turn.

Actions

Multiattack. The chieftain makes two attacks: one with its war-standard and one with its claws, or two with its war-standard.

War-Standard (Glaive). Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d10 + 5) slashing damage.

Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d6 + 5) slashing damage.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Shield Bash (Reaction). When a creature the chieftain can see hits it with a melee attack, the chieftain can slam its heavy shield into the attacker. The attacker must succeed on a DC 15 Strength save or be pushed 10 feet away and have disadvantage on its next attack roll before the end of its turn.

A towering lion-bodied warlord, four powerful paws braced on shattered flagstones, one fist raising a fanged war-standard skyward while a scale-draped shield guards his maned chest.

Lancer's Charge (signature). If the lancer moves at least 20 feet straight toward a target and hits it with a lance, the target takes an extra 7 (2d6) piercing damage and must succeed on a DC 14 Strength save or be knocked prone.

Actions

Lance. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d8 + 3) piercing damage.

Reactions

Cover the Chieftain. When a creature the lancer can see attacks the chieftain within 5 feet of the lancer, the lancer can impose disadvantage on that attack roll, interposing shield and steed.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP6d10+18 (51) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open by charging the loudest, most exposed PC to knock them prone, then claw. If foes cluster, lead with Roar of the Pride to frighten the pack before wading in. Pair him with a couple of cultist-tier lancers; kill-priority should be his shield arm, but at this scale he is already a one-creature wall.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP12d10+60 (126) To-hit+8Save DC15

Open with Roar of the Pride to frighten clusters, then Pounce the frontline striker prone and bite as a bonus action. Use Shield Bash to spoil the party's hardest hitter and his 50 ft. speed to re-charge anyone who flees. Kill-priority is the party's healer; he will gladly trample past tanks to reach the back rank with a clustered minion line behind him.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP18d12+90 (207) To-hit+9Save DC17

Run him as a captain inside a war-host, not alone: pair him with a bigger flagship threat and a screen of Panthera Warriors so his Roar buffs a clustered line. Open by Pouncing the most mobile PC and pinning them prone, kill-priority the controller, and lean on Shield Bash every round to tax the party's action economy. With minions and a lair full of charge-lanes he plays up; on his own a high-tier party will out-act him.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Chieftain Liontaurus?

His native build is CR 6 (2,300 XP), tuned for a party of levels 5-10. Scaled stat blocks are provided for Tier 1 (levels 1-4, ~CR 2) and Tier 3 (levels 11-15, ~CR 11); the traits stay identical and only the numbers move.

Can Chieftain Liontaurus be a companion or ally?

Yes. As a lawful pride-leader he makes a natural war-leader NPC ally, and the bundled Pridemane Lancer companion (AC 15, HP 76) can ride at the party's side, covering the chieftain or a hero with its Lancer's Charge and protective reaction.

Is Chieftain Liontaurus a solo boss?

No — he is a flagship add-on, not a centerpiece. He lacks legendary actions, so a four-PC party will out-act him alone. Run him as a captain leading Pangcat Lancers and Panthera Warriors, or pair him with a larger boss for a proper set-piece.
