LeoKing
LeoKing — The Encounter
Crowned Lion of the Pride, who rules by banner and blade · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is LeoKing
Among the leonine houses of the highland prides, the crown passes not to the strongest claw but to the one whose roar the most warriors will follow. The Leoking earned his banner on a dozen ridgelines, and his people say a single lion may be killed but a pride that hears his voice cannot be broken. He fights at the front, not above it, his standard driven into the earth so every catfolk warrior in the line can see that their king has not retreated and will not. The shield-banner bears the sigil of his house, a leaf and a crowned beast, and where it stands the frightened find their feet again. Older songs name him the Grand Ruler, last of a line that bound the scattered prides into one kingdom; younger ones simply call him the Lion who never turns his back to the foe.
Run LeoKing in Sixty Seconds
- He is a commander, not a brute his banner and Rallying Command are the real threat, so always run him with minions, never as a lone fight.
- Open by planting Royal Standard near his warriors so they shrug off fear and charm, then immediately hand a minion a free attack with Rallying Command.
- Pride's Roar is automatic at half HP giving every ally a half-move and an advantage attack, so expect a burst of damage the turn he gets bloodied.
- Kill-priority for players is the banner-bearer himself drop him and the whole pride loses its free attacks, prone-sweeps, and fear immunity at once.
- Three ways to run him: a banner-buff warlord behind catfolk lines, a bodyguard duo with Panthera, or a lieutenant glued to a larger boss to stretch its action economy.
LeoKing
Medium humanoid (leonine), lawful neutral
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINERoyal Standard. The Leoking carries a great war-banner. Allied creatures within 30 feet of him have advantage on saving throws against being frightened and against effects that would charm them. While the banner stands, the Leoking himself cannot be frightened.
Pride's Roar. Signature. When the Leoking is reduced to half his hit points or fewer for the first time, he lets loose a thunderous roar (no action). Each ally within 30 feet that can hear him may immediately move up to half its speed and makes its next attack before the end of its turn with advantage.
Brave. The Leoking has advantage on saving throws against being frightened.
Actions
Multiattack. The Leoking makes two Royal Blade attacks. He can replace one with a Rallying Command.
Royal Blade. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d10 + 4) slashing damage.
Banner Sweep. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Rallying Command. The Leoking points his banner at one ally he can see within 30 feet. That ally can immediately use its reaction to make one weapon attack.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Lionheart Guard. Reaction. When an ally the Leoking can see within 10 feet is hit by an attack, he interposes his banner and reduces the damage to that ally by 9 (2d6 + 2).
A towering lion-headed king in fluted plate, crown of spikes upon his maned brow, planting a carved war-standard in the rock while his sheathed blade waits at his hip and a royal cape streams behind him.
LeoKing, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEShield Wall (signature). While within 5 feet of the Leoking, LeoKing grants him half cover (+2 AC) and intercepts opportunity attacks made against him.
Actions
War Spear. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) piercing damage.
Reactions
Cover the King. When the Leoking takes damage while LeoKing is within 5 feet, LeoKing can take half that damage instead.
A scarred leonine guardsman of the royal line, spear and broad shield ever angled toward the king's blind side.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open by planting the banner so his catfolk warriors stop fearing the party, then point Rallying Command at the strongest minion for a free swing. If the heroes cluster, lead with Banner Sweep to knock a frontliner prone for the pride to pile onto. Kill-priority is whoever silences his Roar; pair him with 3-4 Panthera Warriors so the action economy is the real threat.
Open by setting Royal Standard near his line, then split Multiattack into a Royal Blade and a Rallying Command to give a flanking ally a free hit. When bloodied, Pride's Roar fires automatically, so save it as a tempo swing rather than spending him early. Kill-priority for the DM is the squishy caster; use Lionheart Guard to babysit your best minion and keep the pride alive longer than the players expect.
Run him as a lieutenant beside a bigger threat, not alone, his Rallying Command and Lionheart Guard multiply a whole warband's output. Open by banner-buffing the line, then Banner Sweep to prone the tank so minions get advantage. Pair him with a flagship boss or a full Panthera Warriors lair; he is the glue that makes the rest of the encounter hit above its weight.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is LeoKing?
At his native Tier 2 he is CR 6 (2,300 XP), a Medium leonine commander built for parties of levels 5-10. The Tier 1 (levels 1-4) and Tier 3 (levels 11-15) columns rescale his AC, HP, to-hit, and save DC so you can drop the same king into any campaign band without changing his traits.
Can LeoKing be a companion or ally?
Yes. He is a natural ally-commander rather than a faceless boss, and his Rallying Command, Royal Standard, and Lionheart Guard all buff the creatures around him, so he plays beautifully as a friendly war-leader or quest patron fighting alongside the party. As an adversary he is best run as the brain of a leonine warband, not a solo duel.
Is LeoKing a solo boss?
No. He has no legendary actions and only one protective reaction, so a four-hero party out-acts him in a straight fight. Pair him with Panthera Warriors, a Tigresaurus, or a larger flagship threat and let his banner-rally kit make the whole encounter punch above its CR.
