Mary Poppins
Mary Poppins — The Encounter
The Wind-Borne Governess of the Foggy Lanes · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Mary Poppins
They call her the wind-borne governess, and the foggy lanes know her by the snap of her umbrella and the click of her heels on the cobbles. No one recalls hiring her; she simply arrives when a household has lost its way, measured by no clock but her own. Folk whisper she is no mortal nurse at all but a fey thing wearing a respectable coat, for her carpet bag yields coat-stands and curatives that could never fit inside it, and the east wind bends to carry her where she pleases. She tidies more than nurseries. Cruelty she sweeps from a room as briskly as dust; a liar's tongue stills under her flat grey stare. Those who mind their manners she rewards with wonders, and those who do not she leaves on the doorstep in the rain. When the wind that brought her changes, she gathers her bag, opens her brolly, and is gone before the gate stops swinging.
Run Mary Poppins in Sixty Seconds
- Stay airborne She hovers at 50 ft. with resistance to nonmagical weapons while flying. Force her down or bring ranged/flight of your own or she farms you from above.
- Open with the cone Lead each fight with Spit-Spot Tidying on the tightest cluster for 5d8 and a 15-ft. shove, then retreat upward out of melee.
- Kill-priority: the bag, then the spoon The Carpet Bag heals and slows; A Spoonful of Sugar saves an ally's failed throw once per round. Burst her down before she stabilizes the line.
- When bloodied She climbs higher and plays pure control, leaning on thrown slows and the recharge cone to buy time. Pin her with grapples or counter-flight before she resets the cone.
- Three ways to run her (1) aerial skirmisher harrying a melee boss, (2) battlefield controller for a minion warband, (3) a non-combat fey patron who tests the party's manners before she ever lifts the brolly.
Mary Poppins
Medium fey (human), lawful neutral
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEBorne on the Brolly. The governess floats aloft on her clockwork umbrella. While she holds it, she has a flying speed of 50 ft. and can hover. The umbrella also serves as her spellcasting focus, and opposing winds and falling are no impediment to her.
Bottomless Carpet Bag. Signature. Her satchel holds far more than its size allows. As a bonus action she draws forth one absurd implement (a coat-stand, a spoonful of cure, a kite) and either heals an ally she can see within 30 ft. for 7 (2d6) hit points, or hurls a heavy oddment as a thrown attack: +7 to hit, range 20/60 ft., on a hit 9 (2d8) bludgeoning damage and the target's speed is halved until the end of its next turn.
Actions
Multiattack. The governess makes two Parasol Strikes, or makes one Parasol Strike and uses Spit-Spot Tidying.
Parasol Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d8 + 3) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be pushed 10 ft. and knocked prone.
Spit-Spot Tidying. The governess snaps her fingers and a measured gust sweeps the field. Each creature of her choice in a 30-foot cone must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 22 (5d8) bludgeoning damage and being pushed 15 ft. on a failure, or half as much damage and no push on a success. Loose objects and difficult terrain in the cone are swept aside. (Recharge 5-6)
Bonus Actions & Reactions
A Spoonful of Sugar. Reaction, when an ally the governess can see within 30 ft. fails a saving throw: that ally may reroll the save and must use the new result.
A prim figure in a long travelling coat and feathered hat rises above the cobblestones, one gloved hand gripping a clockwork umbrella that catches an impossible wind, a battered carpet bag at her hip and crackling blue currents curling at her heels. A stray alley cat watches from the steps below.
Mary Poppins, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEKnows the Lanes (signature). The cat has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks and cannot be surprised. While it is within 30 ft. of the governess, she has advantage on Initiative rolls.
Actions
Raking Pounce. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) slashing damage, and a creature already engaged by another foe takes an extra 7 (2d6) slashing damage.
Reactions
Underfoot. Reaction, when an enemy within 5 ft. moves: the cat darts between its legs; that creature must succeed on a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw or have its speed reduced to 0 until the end of its turn.
A wiry alley cat with knowing eyes that prowls the gutters ahead of the governess, herding the unwary toward her and the cruel away from escape.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open from the air with Spit-Spot Tidying to scatter a clustered party and seize the high ground, then plink with thrown oddments from the Carpet Bag. Save A Spoonful of Sugar for your squishiest ally's worst save. Pair her with a Tier 1 melee brute as the anvil while she controls and heals from above.
She is a flying skirmish-controller, not a stand-up boss. Open with Spit-Spot Tidying on the tightest cluster, then hover out of melee reach and Parasol Strike anyone who climbs to her. Kill-priority is the party healer or controller; halve their speed with the Carpet Bag so they cannot reposition. Pair her with a heavier flagship threat or a pack of minions she can buff and reposition.
Run her as the elite controller in a lair or warband, never alone: a high-level party will out-act a lone skirmisher. Lead with Spit-Spot Tidying to wall the field with forced movement, hover above the melee line, and use A Spoonful of Sugar to keep your front-line minions standing. Pair her with a bigger threat so the party must choose between the anvil and the nanny who keeps it fed.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Mary Poppins?
Her native sheet is CR 6 (2,300 XP), tuned for a Tier 2 party of levels 5-10. The Tier 1 and Tier 3 columns rescale the same kit down to roughly CR 2 and up to roughly CR 11 without changing her traits or actions.
Can Mary Poppins be a companion or ally?
Yes. She makes a striking fey patron or hired governess: a flying controller who heals and repositions allies with the Carpet Bag and A Spoonful of Sugar rather than dealing the killing blow. Drop her combat actions and run her as a quest-giver who weighs the party's conduct before she helps.
Is she a flyer the whole fight?
Yes, as long as she holds the clockwork umbrella she has a 50-ft. hovering fly speed and resistance to nonmagical weapons while airborne. Disarm her, grapple her to the ground, or out-range her, and she loses both the speed and the resistance.
