Syvaryn
Syvaryn — The Encounter
The Resonant Wanderer, bound not by loyalty but by echo · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Syvaryn
Syvaryn is counted among the Lyrians, the wanderers bound not by loyalty but by resonance. Where others swear oaths, she keeps only the silent agreement of one mind ringing in tune with another. It is said she was struck by a sorrow so deep it left a note humming in her bones, and that note now answers to every nearby grief and fear, drawing them toward her like iron to a lodestone. She does not raise her voice; her staff does the speaking, each strike sounding a chord that travels through flesh and into thought. Those who hunt her describe the same dread: the certainty that she already knows where they hide, because some private ache of theirs is singing her name. She wanders without destination, tuning herself to wounded places and broken people, and where she lingers, pain becomes a shared and answering thing. To bind her is impossible, for she is bound already to a music older than allegiance.
Run Syvaryn in Sixty Seconds
- Stay close — Resonant Binding only works while she is within 30 ft. of foes, so she WANTS to be near the party, not skulking; that proximity is the whole engine, lighting up hidden PCs and feeding her disadvantage trick.
- Open with Discordant Note against the tightest cluster — a DC 15 Wis save or 18 psychic and stunned shapes the entire fight; hold it for when three or more PCs are bunched.
- Kill-priority is the support — Veiled Step lets her ignore opportunity attacks and reach the healer or controller; spend her staff on them, not the tank.
- When bloodied, stop trading blows and turn into a reaction engine — drift back, let Echo of Pain and Resonant Binding's disadvantage do the work while allies screen her.
- Three ways to run her: a roaming duelist who hunts the backline; a lair-anchored punisher with echo-minions; or a lieutenant beside a bigger boss, softening the party with psychic chip and stuns.
Syvaryn
Medium humanoid (any race), neutral
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEResonant Binding. Signature. Syvaryn is tethered to nearby minds. While a creature is within 30 feet of her, she knows its exact location even if it is invisible or hidden, and the first time each turn that creature takes damage from any source, Syvaryn can choose to take 5 (1d10) psychic damage herself to make that creature's next attack roll or saving throw before the start of her next turn have disadvantage. The echo of shared pain is her weapon.
Veiled Step. Syvaryn does not provoke opportunity attacks when she moves out of an enemy's reach, and difficult terrain costs her no extra movement.
Actions
Multiattack. Syvaryn makes two Resonant Staff attacks and uses Discordant Note if it is available.
Resonant Staff. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d8+4) bludgeoning damage plus 9 (2d8) psychic damage.
Discordant Note (Recharge 5-6). Syvaryn strikes a chord that only the mind can hear. Each creature of her choice within 30 feet must make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, a creature takes 18 (4d8) psychic damage and is stunned until the end of its next turn; on a success, it takes half damage and is not stunned.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Echo of Pain (Reaction). When a creature Syvaryn can see within 30 feet takes damage, she can lash out across the resonance, dealing 7 (2d6) psychic damage to a different creature she can see within 30 feet.
A tall figure in layered dark robes and a wide conical hat, face lost in shadow, drifting through the world on a long ringing staff. She moves as though the air itself remembers her passing.
Syvaryn, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEShared Resonance (signature). While within 30 feet of Syvaryn, this ally has advantage on saving throws against being frightened, and once per turn when it hits with an attack it deals an extra 4 (1d8) psychic damage as Syvaryn's resonance answers the blow.
Actions
Ringing Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) bludgeoning damage.
Reactions
Echo Ward. When Syvaryn takes damage while within 30 feet, this ally can move up to its speed toward her without provoking opportunity attacks.
A devoted attendant who feels Syvaryn's resonance as a constant hum, moving in eerie lockstep with her silences.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with Discordant Note to stun a cluster, then drift in with Veiled Step and strike the lowest-HP caster. Use Echo of Pain whenever an ally connects to spread the bleed. Pair her with a frontline brute so she can pick targets from the edges.
Open by closing within 30 ft. so Resonant Binding lights up the party, then lead with Discordant Note on the tightest group. Kill-priority is enemy healers and casters — Veiled Step lets her reach them past the front line. When bloodied, fall back and lean on reactions; pair her with minions or a heavier threat to hold the line while she punishes.
Drop her into a lair full of lesser echoes or beside a bigger threat — she is a punisher, not a solo boss. Open Discordant Note on the densest cluster, then ping the backline with Echo of Pain every round. Have minions screen her so she keeps line of sight; focus her staff on whoever the party relies on to dispel or heal.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Syvaryn?
Her home build is CR 6 (2,300 XP), tuned for a party of levels 5-10. The stat record also gives scaled Tier 1 (levels 1-4) and Tier 3 (levels 11-15) versions with the same traits and only the numbers moved.
Can Syvaryn be a companion or ally?
Yes. She works well as an enigmatic ally bound to the party by resonance rather than loyalty — her Echo of Pain and Discordant Note make her a strong controller backing a frontline. The record includes a Bound companion, The Listening Hat, for when she fights alongside someone.
Is Syvaryn a solo boss?
No — she is an add-on threat, not a centerpiece. She has no legendary actions, so a full party out-acts her; run her with minions, in a lair, or paired with a heavier flagship boss whose line she hangs back behind.
