Succubus — The Encounter

Night-hag of folklore who drains the dreaming with a kiss · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Succubus

The grimoires name her among the night-spirits who come to sleepers in the dark hours, and the old confessors warn that her sweetness is a snare baited with a soul. She does not break a fortress wall; she walks through its open gate, having first made a friend of the gatekeeper. By day she wears a borrowed face — a lost lover, a trusted captain, a child at the door — and by night she sheds it for horns and leathery wings. Her kiss is the heart of the legend: it draws the warmth and the years out of a victim a little at a time, so that the doomed believe themselves merely tired, merely dreaming, until nothing of them remains. Those she favors she keeps as devoted servants, fighting and dying gladly at her word. The serrated blade she carries is almost an afterthought — a courtesy for those too stubborn to be loved to death.

Telepathic Bond. While the succubus is within 1 mile of a creature it has charmed, it can communicate telepathically with that creature regardless of distance.

Shapechanger. The succubus can use a bonus action to polymorph into a Small or Medium humanoid, or back into its true winged form. Its statistics are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn't transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies.

Draining Kiss. Signature. The succubus kisses a creature charmed by it or a willing creature. The target must make a Constitution saving throw against the save DC for this tier, taking psychic damage equal to the tier's per-round damage on a failure, or half as much on a success. The target's hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the damage taken, and the succubus regains hit points equal to that reduction. This reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest. The target dies if its hit point maximum drops to 0.

Actions

Multiattack. The succubus makes two attacks with its serrated blade, or uses Charm and makes one blade attack.

Serrated Blade. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (3d8+4) slashing damage, and the target can't regain hit points until the start of the succubus's next turn.

Charm. One humanoid the succubus can see within 30 feet of it must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw against the tier save DC or be magically charmed for 1 day. The charmed target obeys the succubus's verbal or telepathic commands. If the target suffers any harm or receives a suicidal command, it can repeat the saving throw, ending the effect on a success. If a target's saving throw is successful, or the effect ends for it, the target is immune to this succubus's Charm for the next 24 hours. The succubus can have only one target charmed at a time.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Beguiling Gaze (Reaction). When a creature the succubus can see within 30 feet attacks a creature charmed by it, the succubus locks eyes with the attacker; that attacker must succeed on a Wisdom save against the tier save DC or have disadvantage on the attack roll.

Bat-winged and horned, she stands mid-stride with a jagged serrated blade trailing low and her free hand open in invitation — half a caress, half a killing stroke.

Devoted (signature). While within 60 feet of the one who charmed it, the thrall has advantage on saving throws against being frightened and will interpose itself between her and harm.

Actions

Charmed Blade. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) slashing damage.

Reactions

Take the Blow. When the charmer would take damage from an attack within 5 feet, the thrall may swap places and take the damage instead.

A glassy-eyed soldier or courtier who no longer remembers being anyone but hers, and would not wish to.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with Charm on the party's heaviest hitter, then back off and let the blade clean up stragglers. If clustered, she stays airborne and picks off the lowest-HP caster. Pair her with a bigger threat — she is a face and a manipulator, not a frontline brawler.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP16d8+48 (120) To-hit+7Save DC14

Turn 1: Charm the tank, then Multiattack the party's healer. Use Beguiling Gaze to protect your charmed thrall so the party must spend actions freeing their own friend. Kill-priority is the cleric; flee on wings when bloodied and return on her terms. Best run alongside a vampire host or cult leader as the seductive lieutenant.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP24d8+96 (204) To-hit+9Save DC16

She fights with minions and a lair: Charm one PC every round if freed, then Draining Kiss the charmed thrall between rounds to top herself off. Keep her flying above difficult terrain so melee can't pin her. Pair her with a stronger fiend or undead lord as the manipulator who softens the party before the real boss lands.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Succubus?

Her home build is CR 6 (2,300 XP) — a Tier 2 threat for a party of levels 5-10. The record also gives drop-in Tier 1 (CR ~2) and Tier 3 (CR ~11) numbers; traits and actions stay identical, only AC, HP, to-hit, save DC, and damage shift between bands.

Can Succubus be a companion or ally?

Not as a player ally — she is neutral evil and her Charm makes her a faithless 'friend.' But she comes with a Thrall, Beguiled companion (AC 14, 72 HP) representing a charmed mortal who fights and dies for her, and as an NPC she makes an excellent treacherous patron or double-agent.

Is she solo boss material?

No — she has no legendary actions, so a four-PC party out-acts her in a straight fight. Run her as a lieutenant or infiltrator beside a heavier threat (a vampire host fits the Castle of Dracula set), or as a recurring nemesis who slips away on her wings before the killing blow lands.

The Legend

Succubus is the kind of creature that ends campaigns. Not through raw statistics — any monster manual can give you numbers — but through presence. The moment this miniature hits the table, the conversation changes. Players stop joking. Dice get picked up with purpose. Clay Cyanide sculpted Succubus to command that reaction: dynamic pose, aggressive silhouette, and surface detail that reveals new horrors at every viewing angle. With 12,891 community views, this is a proven table-stopper.

In Your Campaign

Encounter Design: Succubus works as a mid-to-high tier encounter that rewards tactical thinking. Place it in terrain that plays to its strengths — restricted sightlines, difficult ground, or vertical elements that force the party to adapt.

Campaign Hooks: A bounty that experienced adventurers refuse. Territorial expansion forcing Succubus into populated areas. A wizard who thinks they can control it. They can't.
