Calibos, the Skeleton King — The Encounter

Crowned corpse who remembers life and hates it · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Calibos, the Skeleton King

He was a king, once, and the ledger says he died as kings do. The ledger lies. Some pact, some grudge, some refusal at the threshold dragged Calibos back across it, and the thing that returned was not restored but reforged into a weapon that wears his face. The flesh is gone; the bearing remains. He stands as he stood in life, sword planted through the skulls of those who knelt too late, crown fused to bare bone so that no death can unseat him. What he kept across the grave was not memory of love or duty but memory of being whole, and he hates the living for the lie that they will keep what he lost. He commands lesser dead the way he once commanded soldiers, and he repays every wound with the patience of a creature that has all of time and nothing left to fear. To stand before him is to be remembered, and to be remembered is to be added to the cairn.

Undead Fortitude. If damage reduces Calibos to 0 hit points, he makes a Constitution saving throw with a DC of 5 + the damage taken, unless the damage is radiant or from a critical hit. On a success, he drops to 1 hit point instead. The crown will not let the body lie down.

Crown of Grave Authority. Signature. Undead within 30 feet of Calibos can't be turned and have advantage on saving throws against effects that turn undead. While he stands, any undead he commands that is reduced to 0 hit points within 30 feet of him rises again at the start of his next turn with 1 hit point (each ally may rise only once per turn).

Hateful Remembrance. Calibos has advantage on attack rolls against any creature that has dealt damage to him this combat. He remembers every wound.

Actions

Multiattack. Calibos makes two greatsword attacks.

Royal Greatsword. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+5) slashing damage plus 9 (2d8) necrotic damage.

Withering Command (Recharge 5-6). Calibos points his blade and speaks a word of the grave. Each creature of his choice within 30 feet must make a DC 16 Constitution saving throw, taking 27 (6d8) necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. A creature reduced to 0 hit points by this damage that is not undead rises as a skeleton under Calibos's control at the start of his next turn.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Wound-Memory Riposte (Reaction). When a creature Calibos can see hits him with a melee attack, he makes one Royal Greatsword attack against that creature. The crown turns every blow into a debt repaid.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Legendary Actions. Calibos can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. He regains spent legendary actions at the start of his turn.

Grave Step. Calibos moves up to his speed without provoking opportunity attacks. Skulls turn to watch him pass.

Crowned Strike. Calibos makes one Royal Greatsword attack.

Decree of Dread (Costs 2 Actions). Each creature within 30 feet of Calibos that can see him must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened of him until the end of its next turn.

A crowned corpse in spiked battle-plate, one gauntleted hand resting on a greatsword driven point-down through a cairn of skulls, a tattered royal cape hanging from his shoulders. Empty sockets still track the living, and the body stands with the bearing of the king it once was.

Banner of the Risen (signature). While the bearer is conscious, friendly undead within 20 feet have advantage on saving throws against being turned and gain 5 temporary hit points the first time they start their turn within range each combat.

Actions

Standard-Spike. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d10+4) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) necrotic damage.

Reactions

Raise the Fallen. When an allied undead within 20 feet drops to 0 hit points, the bearer can plant the standard; that ally rises at the start of its next turn with 1 hit point. Usable once per short rest.

A war-standard of bone and tattered royal cloth, carried by a chosen skeletal champion who marches a half-step behind the king and never lets the dead truly fall.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP45 (7d8+14) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open with Withering Command to thin a clustered party, then wade in with the greatsword and the Riposte reaction punishing the first hero to swing. Kill-priority is whoever last damaged him (Hateful Remembrance). At this size run him with 2-4 skeletons so the Crown can stand them back up.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP114 (12d8+60) To-hit+7Save DC14

Lead with the cape-and-crown menace: Decree of Dread to frighten the front line, then Multiattack the unfrightened striker. Hold Withering Command until three or more PCs cluster. Use legendary Grave Step to chase fleeing healers and let Wound-Memory Riposte tax every melee attacker.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC18HP168 (16d8+96) To-hit+9Save DC16

As a solo boss, open with Decree of Dread, then Multiattack the highest-damage PC; spend legendary actions on Crowned Strike against anyone who hit him and Grave Step to stay on the squishies. Recharge Withering Command into the cluster to convert downed foes into skeletons. Kill-priority: the radiant/turning caster, since they bypass Undead Fortitude. Pair the fight with risen skeletons so the Crown's revival loop keeps the action economy in his favor.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Calibos, the Skeleton King?

His home build is CR 9 (5,000 XP) for an 11th-15th level party, run as a solo boss thanks to legendary actions and the Wound-Memory Riposte reaction. Scaled-down CR ~2 and ~6 stat lines are provided for Tier 1 and Tier 2 tables — the traits stay identical, only the numbers move.

Can Calibos be a companion or ally?

As written he is a lawful evil adversary, but the Cairn Standard companion (a bound skeletal champion bearing his war-banner) can join either side — use it as an undead ally for a necromancer PC or as reinforcement that keeps his skeletons rising mid-fight.

How do I beat Undead Fortitude without it feeling cheap?

Radiant damage and critical hits ignore the save entirely, so prioritize a paladin's smite, a cleric's radiant spells, or a held crit for the finishing blow. Burst him below 0 in a single hit and the DC (5 + damage taken) becomes nearly impossible — chip damage is what lets the crown stand him back up.

The Legend

Death was supposed to be the end for Calibos, the Skeleton King. It wasn't. Whatever force pulled this entity back from the grave didn't restore it — it weaponized it. Clay Cyanide's sculpt leans into the horror of undeath: exposed bone where flesh has failed, empty eyes that still track movement, a posture that mimics life closely enough to trigger the uncanny valley. This is not a skeleton with a sword. This is something that used to be a person and remembers enough to hate what it's become.

In Your Campaign

CR Range: 5-15 (depending on undead type)

Encounter Design: Calibos, the Skeleton King creates encounters that blend combat with horror. Use dim lighting, environmental storytelling (scattered equipment of previous victims), and mechanics that emphasize the wrongness of undeath — resistance to pain, relentless pursuit, abilities that corrupt the living.

Campaign Hooks: A noble family's dark secret. A battlefield that won't stay quiet. A necromancer's masterwork that has developed independent will.
