Dracula
Dracula — The Encounter
The undying boyar who commands night, blood, and bat · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Dracula
He was a lord once, a warlord of the old mountain passes who bargained his soul against death and won the worst kind of victory. The grave took him; something colder gave him back. Now he holds his keep beyond the reach of years, his portrait unchanged through generations of terrified servants. By day he sleeps in consecrated soil carried from a buried chapel; by night he walks the parapets and calls the bats down like a black rain. Folk along the river hang garlic in their windows and bury their dead deep, for those he drains do not always stay dead. He is courteous to a fault, a perfect host who pours wine he will not drink and speaks of war as though it were last week. Cross his threshold uninvited and he cannot touch you; accept his hospitality and you are already his. Sunlight unmakes him, running water repels him, and the brandished cross sends him hissing into shadow.
Run Dracula in Sixty Seconds
- Open with Charm on the party's biggest damage dealer or the healer; a turned ally is worth more than any bite, and it splits the party's action economy in half.
- Kill-priority for the PCs is light and faith radiant damage and holy water shut off Regeneration for a round, and a brandished holy symbol can keep him 5 ft. back; make sure your players know these levers exist.
- When bloodied, he feeds grapple a downed or restrained target and bite to claw 20+ HP back per turn; chase the lowest-HP PC and use legendary Move to disengage from the front line.
- Three ways to run him as a courtly host who charms and manipulates before any blade is drawn; as a swarm-lord who buries the party in bats and rats; or as a brute who grapples and drains the strongest fighter to death.
- Remember his cage sunlight deals 20 radiant and stops Regeneration, running water repels him, and he cannot enter a home uninvited; a clever party that lures him into dawn ends the fight fast.
Dracula
Medium undead (shapechanger), lawful evil
CR 11 · 7,200 XP · GUIDELINERegeneration. The boyar regains 20 hit points at the start of his turn if he has at least 1 hit point and isn't in sunlight or running water. If he takes radiant damage or damage from holy water, this trait doesn't function at the start of his next turn.
Crimson Hunger (Signature). When the boyar reduces a creature to 0 hit points with his bite, or feeds on a willing or restrained creature, he regains hit points equal to the damage dealt and casts off any one condition affecting him. A humanoid slain this way and buried in unhallowed earth may rise the next dusk as a thing in his thrall.
Weaknesses. The boyar takes 20 radiant damage and cannot use Regeneration while in sunlight; he has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks there. He cannot enter a dwelling uninvited, and is repelled by a brandished holy symbol (he must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom save to approach within 5 ft. of it).
Actions
Multiattack. The boyar makes two attacks, only one of which can be a bite.
Unarmed Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d8+4) bludgeoning damage. Instead of dealing damage, the boyar can grapple the target (escape DC 17).
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one willing creature or one that is grappled by the boyar, incapacitated, or restrained. Hit: 7 (1d6+4) piercing damage plus 14 (4d6) necrotic damage. The target's hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the necrotic damage taken, and the boyar regains that many hit points. The reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest. The target dies if this reduces its hit point maximum to 0.
Charm. The boyar targets one creature he can see within 30 ft. If the target can see the boyar, it must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed for 1 hour. The charmed target regards him as a trusted friend to be heeded. Each time the boyar or his companions do anything harmful to the target, it may repeat the save, ending the effect on a success. Otherwise it lasts until sunrise or until the boyar is on a different plane.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Children of the Night (1/Day). As a bonus action, the boyar calls 2d4 swarms of bats or rats, which arrive in 1d4 rounds, acting as his allies and obeying his commands. Outdoors he may instead summon 3d6 wolves. The creatures remain for 1 hour, until he dies, or until he dismisses them.
Legendary Actions (3/Round)
Move. The boyar moves up to his speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Unarmed Strike. The boyar makes one unarmed strike.
Bite (Costs 2 Actions). The boyar makes one bite attack.
An aristocrat caught mid-summons, one hand thrown skyward as a tide of bats erupts from his fingertips and a winged gargoyle hunches at his feet. The high collar and noble bearing belie a corpse that simply refused to stay buried.
Dracula, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEThrall's Devotion (signature). Dracula is immune to being charmed by the boyar and has advantage on saving throws against fear while the boyar is within sight. He will throw himself between his master and harm without hesitation.
Actions
Frenzied Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d6+2) slashing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution save or be poisoned until the end of its next turn.
Reactions
Living Shield. When an ally within 5 ft. is hit by an attack, Dracula steps in and takes the damage instead, reducing it by 5 (1d8).
A wide-eyed servant who eats flies to take their little lives into himself, certain his master will reward such devotion with eternity.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with Charm on the most armored melee fighter so the party's own muscle turns on them, then bite the charmed mark to drain and heal. If clustered, hold Children of the Night for a swarm that pins ranged attackers. Pair with a coven of thralls or a haunted lair; do not run him alone against a fresh party at this tier.
Charm the party healer first, then close and bite to drain max HP while Regeneration outpaces their damage. When clustered, drop the bat swarm to break their formation and isolate a victim for a grapple-then-bite combo. Frame him with bat swarms and a thrall or two; he is a strong centerpiece but happiest with minions screening him.
Open by charming the highest-damage PC, then Multiattack into a grapple + bite to drain and self-heal; spend legendary Bites between turns to keep his pool topped. Kill-priority is anyone holding a holy symbol or light source. He is a true solo boss with his lair and bat swarms; deny him sunlight, running water, and an open invitation and he is nearly unkillable.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Dracula?
His home stat block is CR 11 (7,200 XP), built for Tier 3 play (levels 11-15) as a solo vampire-lord boss. Scaled tiers are provided for levels 1-4 and 5-10 so you can drop him into a lower-level campaign as a recurring nemesis without rewriting the kit.
Can Dracula be a companion or ally?
Not as a player ally; he is a self-serving undead boyar who sees the living as cattle and converts those he charms or drains into his thralls. The included companion, Renfield, is the closer fit: a devoted servant who fights beside him and throws himself in harm's way. A redemption arc is possible at your table, but it is a long, dangerous road.
How do I keep him from being unkillable?
His Regeneration is the whole fight, so give the party clear answers to it: radiant damage, holy water, and a sunlight or daylight effect all shut it off. Running water and the uninvited-threshold rule let smart players control where the fight happens. Without those levers a 20-HP-per-turn heal will grind any party down, so seed the knowledge before the encounter.

The Legend
In Your Campaign
CR Range: 5-15 (depending on undead type)
Encounter Design: Dracula creates encounters that blend combat with horror. Use dim lighting, environmental storytelling (scattered equipment of previous victims), and mechanics that emphasize the wrongness of undeath — resistance to pain, relentless pursuit, abilities that corrupt the living.
Campaign Hooks: A noble family's dark secret. A battlefield that won't stay quiet. A necromancer's masterwork that has developed independent will.
