Lunadrake — The Encounter

Moon-drowned revenant whose chest screams the faces of the dead · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Lunadrake

When the dying are abandoned beneath a full and pitiless moon, their last breath sometimes refuses to leave the body. It curdles instead, knotting flesh upon flesh until a single corpse swells with the screams of every soul left untended in that place. So is a Lunadrake made. The skull set in its breast is not its own; it is the loudest of the dead it carries, and it wails without rest, a sound that scrapes the courage from living hearts. Grave-tenders along the old roads speak of these things rising in plague-pits and on battlefields where no priest came to close the eyes of the fallen. The Lunadrake does not hunt for hunger but for company, dragging the warm and breathing toward the maw in its chest so that they too might be added to its chorus. Salt, fire, and a name spoken in love are said to quiet it; little else will.

Wailing Maw. The skull and ribcage fused into the Lunadrake's chest are a second, ever-screaming mouth. At the start of each of the Lunadrake's turns, each creature within 15 feet that can hear it must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or take 7 (2d6) psychic damage and be unable to take reactions until the start of its next turn.

Undead Fortitude. If damage reduces the Lunadrake to 0 hit points, it makes a Constitution saving throw with a DC of 5 + the damage taken, unless the damage is radiant or from a critical hit. On a success, it drops to 1 hit point instead.

Actions

Multiattack. The Lunadrake makes two Talon attacks. If both hit the same target, the target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Talon. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d6 + 5) slashing damage plus 7 (2d6) necrotic damage.

Devouring Lurch (Recharge 5-6). The Lunadrake lunges and the chest-maw bites. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 22 (4d8 + 5) necrotic damage, and the target's hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the necrotic damage taken until it finishes a long rest. The Lunadrake regains hit points equal to half the necrotic damage dealt.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Reaping Claw. Reaction, when a creature the Lunadrake can see ends its movement within 10 feet: the Lunadrake makes one Talon attack against that creature.

A hunched, moon-bleached revenant of teal and rotted flesh, crowned in a fan of jagged horns, with a screaming skull and an open ribcage fused into its chest where its heart should be. Its overlong arms end in cracked bone talons that drag the dead toward its wailing maw.

Pack of the Pit (signature). While within 10 feet of an ally, the ghoul has advantage on attack rolls against any creature that has taken damage this round.

Actions

Rending Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d6 + 2) piercing damage, and if the target is a creature other than an undead, it must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or be paralyzed for 1 minute. The target can repeat the save at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success.

Reactions

Scuttle. Reaction, when a creature within 5 feet stands up from prone: the ghoul moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

A lesser hunger drawn into the Lunadrake's wake, scuttling low to finish whatever the revenant knocks down.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP6d10 + 18 (51) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open with the Wailing Maw to lock down reactions, then wade into the most clustered pair and use the double-Talon prone rider to drop a target. Save Devouring Lurch for whoever has the fewest hit points. At this tier keep it beside skeletons or zombies so it isn't focus-fired off the table.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP15d10 + 45 (127) To-hit+7Save DC14

Park it in the middle of the party so the 15-ft. Wailing Maw catches two or three PCs and shuts off their reactions, then Reaping Claw punishes anyone who closes or repositions. Kill-priority is the squishiest caster: Devouring Lurch on recharge eats their hit point maximum. Pair it with a flock of ghouls or a controller standing behind it.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP24d10 + 96 (228) To-hit+9Save DC16

Use it as the bruiser anchor of a larger undead horde or a lair fight, not as a lone boss. Open by lurching into the front line, then let Wailing Maw and Reaping Claw tax a clustered party every round while minions screen it. Pair it with a bigger threat that controls the battlefield so its lack of legendary actions doesn't get out-acted by four PCs.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Lunadrake?

Its home stat block is CR 6 (2,300 XP), tuned for a party of levels 5-10. Scaled tiers are provided for levels 1-4 and 11-15; only the numbers change, the traits and actions stay the same.

Can Lunadrake be a companion or ally?

As written it is a neutral evil undead adversary, not a player ally. If you want a friendly version, use the bound Moon-Lured Ghoul companion block provided, or reflavor a tamed Lunadrake as a necromancer's bodyguard kept under another creature's control.

Is Lunadrake actually a dragon despite the name?

No. Despite being filed under the dragons collection, the model is a bloated undead abomination with a screaming skull fused into its chest, so it is statted as a Large undead rather than a true dragon.
