Sylvaris — The Encounter

Stone-Calm Brawler of the Emberborn, fists of volcanic judgment · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Sylvaris

Among the Emberborn warrior-creeds, Sylvaris is the lesson the masters point to when a hot-blooded acolyte mistakes fury for strength. He came to the discipline a brawler and left it a judge, learning that the slowest fist lands surest. His gauntlets, the Skarblades, were forged from cooled flows of a sacred mountain and quenched in his own breath; they are instruments of correction, not display. Where his kin Myrraleth rampage and Kaeltharix demolish, Sylvaris disarms, disables, and dominates, breaking grips and stances long before he breaks bone. He recites one creed before every contest: violence is not chaos but clarity. Those who survive his judgment speak less of pain than of the unbearable patience in his eyes, the certainty that no flailing, no spell, no blade drawn in haste could reach him before his answer landed. He does not hate his foes. He simply concludes them.

Unarmored Defense. While Sylvaris wears no armor and wields no shield, his AC equals 10 + his Dexterity modifier + his Wisdom modifier.

Skarblade Discipline. Signature. Sylvaris fights with cold patience rather than rage. The first time on each of his turns he hits a creature with a Skarblade strike, that creature must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be unable to take reactions until the start of Sylvaris's next turn, and any weapon or shield it holds is knocked to the ground (his choice). He never has disadvantage on an attack from a target's defensive maneuvers.

Actions

Multiattack. Sylvaris makes three Skarblade strikes.

Skarblade Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) bludgeoning damage plus 3 (1d6) fire damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be pushed 5 feet and knocked prone.

Searing Palm (Recharge 5-6). Sylvaris drives a gauntlet into one creature within 5 feet. The target makes a DC 14 Constitution saving throw, taking 28 (8d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. On a failed save the target is also stunned until the end of its next turn.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Stone Stance (Reaction). When a creature Sylvaris can see hits him with an attack, he plants his feet and halves the damage from that attack, then may move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.

A colossus of orange scale and corded muscle, Sylvaris holds a patient boxer's guard, both fists sheathed in blackened volcanic-steel gauntlets and his lower body wound in monk's wrappings. He waits, unhurried, for the opening that ends a fight.

Read the Stance (signature). Once per turn, when the Sylvaris hits a creature an ally is also engaged with, that ally has advantage on its next attack against the same target before the end of its turn.

Actions

Wrapped Fist. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d4 + 4) bludgeoning damage plus 3 (1d6) fire damage.

Reactions

Catch the Blow. When an adjacent ally is hit by a melee attack, the Sylvaris reduces that damage by 1d8 + 3.

A lean acolyte of the same creed, wrappings dusted in ash, who steadies the line and turns an opening into a finish.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+24 (60) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open by closing the gap and disarming the loudest weapon-user or caster with Skarblade Discipline, stripping its reaction. Keep him locked on a single priority target; he is a controller-bruiser, not a wrecking ball. Pair him with archers or a small pack so the disarmed target stays pinned.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP15d8+60 (127) To-hit+7Save DC14

Open on whoever holds a weapon or focus: three strikes knock it prone and disarm it, locking down its turn. Hold Searing Palm for a clustered or low-Con caster to stun. Stone Stance lets him soak the alpha strike and reposition; run him beside a heavier flagship so the party can't simply gang the lone bruiser down.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d8+100 (190) To-hit+9Save DC16

He still plays as the disabler, not the boss: feed him to the front line to disarm and stun the party's anchor while a bigger threat or his lair does the killing. Open on the controller, Searing Palm the densest knot, and use Stone Stance to walk through interception. Pair him with minions or a larger adversary; alone, four PCs out-act him.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Sylvaris?

Sylvaris is built as a Challenge Rating 6 bruiser (2,300 XP) at his native tier, a strong match for a party of four around levels 5-10. Tier 1 (CR ~2) and Tier 3 (CR ~11) versions are provided with the same kit and rescaled numbers.

Can Sylvaris be a companion or ally?

Yes. As an ally he is a disciplined frontline controller — his Skarblade Discipline disarms and denies a foe's reaction, letting your party focus fire. The included Cinder-Adept, Sworn is a lighter NPC option if you want a partner rather than a full bruiser at the table.

Is Sylvaris an actual dragon?

No — despite the Alpha Draconis line, the mini is a draconic humanoid warrior-monk, statted here as a Medium humanoid (dragonkin) brawler. Run him as a fist-fighting bruiser with fire-touched gauntlets, not a flying, breath-weapon dragon.
