Vyrakal — The Encounter

Scaled executioner-priest who reaps order from carnage · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Vyrakal

Among the dragonblooded creeds it is written that the world drifts ever toward chaos, and that chaos must be cut. Vyrakal is the appointed reaper of one such creed, an executioner-priest raised from hatchling to wield the harvesting blade. His scythe, the chronicles claim, was quenched not in water but in the cold light of an eclipse, and it remembers every neck it has parted. He does not duel; he sweeps, moving through ranks of the condemned as a thresher moves through grain, pronouncing each death as scripture. Those who serve his order say he feels no anger, only the patient certainty of a verdict already passed. He fights at the front of shock columns and ritual purges, never as a lone champion but as the keenest instrument of a greater will. Where he passes, the chronicles end the entry the same way: "Order was restored, and it was red."

Reaper's Sweep. When Vyrakal hits a creature with his scythe, his next scythe attack this turn against a different creature within reach has advantage. His blade was forged to harvest crowds, not duelists.

Doctrine of Obliteration. Vyrakal deals an extra 7 (2d6) damage to any creature that is below its hit point maximum. He completes what others have begun.

Actions

Multiattack. Vyrakal makes two Void-Scythe attacks.

Void-Scythe. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+5) slashing damage. On a critical hit, the target must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or be stunned until the end of its next turn.

Executioner's Decree (Recharge 5-6). Vyrakal points his scythe at one creature he can see within 30 feet and pronounces its end. The target must make a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw, taking 27 (6d8) necrotic damage on a failure, or half as much on a success. A creature reduced below half its hit point maximum by this damage is also knocked prone.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Harvest Step (Reaction). When a creature Vyrakal can see drops to 0 hit points within 30 feet, he can move up to half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks and gains 10 temporary hit points.

A towering dragon-scaled warrior sheathed in pale lunar-forged plate, dragging a void-tempered scythe across a floor slick with the blood of the disorderly.

Litany of the Verdict (signature). As a bonus action, the acolyte chants a sentence of doom at one creature within 30 feet. Until the start of the acolyte's next turn, the first creature to hit that target deals an extra 4 (1d8) damage.

Actions

Censer Flail. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d10+4) bludgeoning damage plus 3 (1d6) fire damage.

Reactions

Interpose. When a creature the acolyte can see targets its bound master with an attack, the acolyte can move up to 5 feet and become the target instead if it is within reach of the original target.

A robed dragonkin novice who tends the executioner's blade and recites the verdict before each fall, ready to die so the doctrine endures.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP6d8+18 (45) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with Executioner's Decree on the softest-looking caster, then wade in and Multiattack. If two PCs cluster within reach, lean on Reaper's Sweep to hit both. At this tier he is a brutal mini-boss for a level 3-4 party; pair him with a few cultist guards and a chokepoint.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC17HP14d8+56 (119) To-hit+7Save DC14

Open by isolating the front line, sweep between two targets with Reaper's Sweep, and save Executioner's Decree for a creature already bloodied so Doctrine of Obliteration stacks. Kill-priority: anyone below max HP. He is an elite add-on, not a solo threat, so run him beside a bigger flagship or a wave of acolytes and let Harvest Step carry him to the next victim.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d10+100 (210) To-hit+9Save DC16

Deploy him with minions or in a ritual-purge lair, never alone, as a four-PC party out-acts a single body. Open with Decree, sweep clustered targets, and use Harvest Step off every minion kill to reposition onto the next bloodied PC. Pair it with a bigger threat so the party cannot simply focus him down.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Vyrakal?

Vyrakal is built as a CR 6 elite at his native Tier 2 (party levels 5-10): AC 17, 119 HP, +7 to hit, save DC 14. The record also gives scaled Tier 1 and Tier 3 versions so you can drop him into a level 1-4 or 11-15 game without rebuilding him.

Can Vyrakal be a companion or ally?

He is designed as an adversary, an executioner-priest of a dragonblooded creed, not a follower. If you want an ally for that side, use the bound Cinder-Acolyte stat block included here; it makes a thematic NPC retainer or a low-tier helper for a villainous patron.

Is Vyrakal a true dragon?

No. He is a Medium dragonblooded humanoid, a scaled warrior-priest who walks on two legs and wields a scythe, not a winged wyrm. Treat him like an elite martial commander with a draconic heritage rather than a breath-weapon dragon.
