Xarvokhan — The Encounter

Flame-scarred berserker who feeds the fire within · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Xarvokhan

Among the Emberborn warbands of the Alpha Draconis line, Xarvokhan is spoken of as fury given scale and sinew. He does not fight for territory or plunder; he fights to feed the fire that smolders behind his ribs, a heat his kin name the Creed. His blade, Ashreaver, was hammered from fractured meteorite-stone, brittle as cooled slag yet keen as vengeance, and it sings white when blood touches it. He scorns armor as the refuge of cowards, wearing only a single battered pauldron and a belt of trophies, so that each scar across his hide stands as proof of devotion. His howls travel ahead of his stride, and veteran ranks have broken before steel ever met steel. Those who have crossed him say the wounds he takes only stoke him hotter, that the closer he draws to death the brighter his fire burns, and that to wound Xarvokhan is merely to teach him your name.

Reckless. At the start of its turn, Xarvokhan can gain advantage on all melee weapon attack rolls during that turn, but attack rolls against it have advantage until the start of its next turn.

Feed the Fire. Signature. Each time Xarvokhan reduces a creature to 0 hit points or scores a critical hit with a melee attack, the inner fire surges: he gains 10 temporary hit points and his next melee hit before the end of his next turn deals an extra 9 (2d8) fire damage as the meteorite blade Ashreaver flares white-hot.

Actions

Multiattack. Xarvokhan makes two Ashreaver attacks.

Ashreaver (Meteorite Greatsword). Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) slashing damage plus 4 (1d8) fire damage.

Howling Charge (Recharge 5-6). Xarvokhan moves up to his speed in a straight line and makes one Ashreaver attack. On a hit, the target takes an extra 9 (2d8) slashing damage and must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. Each creature within 10 ft. of where he ends his move must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened of him until the end of its next turn.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Bloodscent. Bonus Action. Xarvokhan moves up to half his speed toward a creature he can see that is below its hit point maximum, without provoking opportunity attacks.

Mark of Loyalty. Reaction. When Xarvokhan takes damage from a creature he can see within 30 ft., he can roar a challenge; that creature must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on attack rolls against any target other than Xarvokhan until the end of its next turn.

A flame-scarred reptilian warrior charges bipedal across the field, jagged meteorite blade Ashreaver raised in declaration, his armor reduced to a single spiked pauldron because every bare wound is a mark of loyalty to the Creed.

Ember-Touched (signature). While you wield this meteorite blade, the first creature you reduce to 0 hit points on each of your turns grants you 5 temporary hit points as the fire within drinks the kill.

Actions

Meteorite Edge. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) slashing damage plus 4 (1d8) fire damage.

Reactions

Flare. When the wielder is hit by a melee attack, you can flare the blade white-hot; the attacker takes 7 (2d6) fire damage.

Brittle meteorite forged into a notched, oversized blade that glows from within when blood touches it; it remembers every kill and hungers for the next.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+24 (60) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with Howling Charge to scatter the front line and frighten the squishiest target, then close on whoever looks hurt with Bloodscent. Kill-priority is the lowest-HP martial so Feed the Fire snowballs. Run him as a fast bruiser ahead of slower minions; pair him with a flagship reptilian boss rather than fielding him alone.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC15HP13d8+65 (123) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open with Howling Charge into the densest cluster for the prone + frightened combo, then go Reckless and double-swing the same wounded PC to trigger Feed the Fire and the +2d8 fire rider. Use Mark of Loyalty whenever the party tank ignores him to drag the dangerous striker off your casters. Excellent as a champion-add beside a true dragon or a warband; he is a skirmisher, not the centerpiece.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d10+100 (210) To-hit+9Save DC17

Keep him on the flank with minions and let Bloodscent + Howling Charge chain him from one bloodied PC to the next so Feed the Fire never cools. Reserve Mark of Loyalty to lock down a high-burst striker each round. At this tier he is a relentless harasser, not a solo threat; pair him with a bigger lair-bound dragon or commander so the party cannot simply focus and out-act him.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Xarvokhan?

His native build is CR 6 (2,300 XP), a Tier 2 skirmisher champion for a party of levels 5-10. Scale him down to roughly CR 2 for Tier 1 or up to about CR 11 for Tier 3 using the per-tier numbers above; his traits and actions stay identical, only the AC, HP, to-hit, and save DC move.

Can Xarvokhan be a companion or ally?

Xarvokhan himself is a wild, Creed-bound berserker who follows no one but the fire, so he makes a poor bound ally. Instead, his relic blade Ashreaver can be claimed: see the companion block for a wieldable meteorite greatsword that drinks kills for temporary hit points and flares white-hot against attackers.

Is Xarvokhan a dragon?

No. Despite the Alpha Draconis branding he is a Medium humanoid (reptilian) Emberborn berserker, not a true dragon, so spells and effects that target the dragon type do not work on him. Treat him as a fast, fire-blooded melee champion best fielded alongside an actual dragon or warband rather than as a solo boss.
