Froggy Sage — The Encounter

Toad-riding hermit of the marsh, master of summoned flame · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Froggy Sage

In the reed-choked monasteries of the turtle-folk, the toad-riding hermits are revered as living altars. Folk tale names them after the old marsh-immortal who rode a great toad and bartered with the spirits of fen and ember: a recluse who renounced speech, food, and warmth until the only heat left to him was the fire he learned to summon and hold motionless in the air. Pilgrims climb the wetland stairs to ask the Froggy Sage for omens, and he answers only by the shapes his flames take. Those who come with violence find the meditation is not surrender but a coiled spring. The great toad beneath him is no mere mount but a bound elder spirit, and the two share one slow heartbeat. Strike the hermit and the toad bellows; strike the toad and the hermit's eyes snap open. To disturb the stillness is to invite the cinder-mandala, the only sermon he gives to the unworthy.

Amphibious. The sage can breathe air and water.

Hermit's Stillness. Signature. While the sage holds its meditative posture (it has not moved this turn), it has advantage on Wisdom and Constitution saving throws, and the first time it would be reduced to 0 hit points before its next turn it instead drops to 1 hit point and is staggered. The fire-aura around it burns brighter as it concentrates.

Sage's Focus. The sage can maintain concentration on two summoning effects at once, treating its bound flame and its toad-mount as a single sustained meditation.

Actions

Multiattack. The sage makes two Searing Palm attacks, or it casts summon ember and makes one Searing Palm attack.

Searing Palm. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+3) fire damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or be unable to take reactions until the end of its next turn.

Summon Ember. Ranged Spell Attack: +6 to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (4d6+3) fire damage. On a hit, the sage may shove an ember to a creature within 10 ft. of the target, dealing 7 (2d6) fire damage to it (no attack roll).

Mandala of Cinders (Recharge 5-6). The sage exhales a blooming ring of flame in a 20-foot radius centered on itself. Each creature in the area must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw, taking 28 (8d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. The ground within the area becomes lightly obscured by smoke until the start of the sage's next turn.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Mantra Step (Bonus Action). The sage takes the Dash or Disengage action, sliding through smoke without provoking opportunity attacks.

A robed toadfolk hermit sits cross-legged in meditation atop a mountainous golden toad, palms pressed in silent prayer while a halo of red-black flame coils around him. He has spent a century learning to hold fire still in the mind, and now it answers his breath.

Swallow (signature). The toad attempts to engulf one Medium or smaller creature it has grappled; the target is blinded and restrained inside the toad, takes 10 (3d6) acid damage at the start of each of the toad's turns, and the toad can have only one creature swallowed at a time.

Actions

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d8+3) piercing damage, and a Medium or smaller target is grappled (escape DC 13).

Reactions

Croaking Bulwark. When the sage atop the toad would be hit by an attack, the toad rears, granting the sage +2 AC against that attack; if the attack misses, the toad's tongue lashes the attacker for 7 (2d6) bludgeoning damage.

A house-sized golden toad with sleepy, half-lidded eyes that has carried the hermit for so long the two breathe as one. It guards its rider with body and tongue and swallows the bold whole.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP6d8+24 (51) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with Summon Ember on the nearest spellcaster, then sit in Hermit's Stillness daring melee in. If two or more PCs cluster within 20 ft., open Mandala of Cinders early. Pair it with a few turtle-folk acolytes so the party cannot just dogpile the hermit.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP13d8+65 (123) To-hit+6Save DC14

Open from the toad's back: Summon Ember on the squishiest target, hold Stillness to bait the front line into Searing Palm range. Kill-priority is the hermit, but the bound toad's Swallow and Croaking Bulwark punish anyone who rushes him. Save Mandala of Cinders for when three or more PCs bunch up, then Mantra Step out of the smoke.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP19d8+114 (199) To-hit+8Save DC16

Run him as a lieutenant beside a bigger marsh-spirit or warband, never alone, since one staggered meditation buys the party a clean turn. Open Mandala of Cinders the instant the party clusters, then Searing Palm-lock the melee from atop the toad. Pair it with the bound toad fully active and a screen of acolytes so the cinder-mandala always catches someone.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Froggy Sage?

Natively CR 6 (Tier 2, levels 5-10): AC 16, 123 HP, +6 to hit, save DC 14. Stat lines for Tier 1 (~CR 2) and Tier 3 (~CR 11) are provided so you can drop him into any party — the traits and actions stay identical, only the numbers shift.

Can Froggy Sage be a companion or ally?

Yes. A peaceful toad-riding hermit makes a wonderful mentor or omen-giver met at a wetland monastery. His bound Great Toad is built as a companion stat block (AC 13, 74 HP) that can serve as a mount or guardian — and a redeemed or befriended sage can lend the party his Summon Ember support in a hard fight.

Is Froggy Sage a solo boss?

No — he is an add-on, not a centerpiece. He lacks legendary actions, so a four-PC party will out-act him alone. Run him with turtle-folk acolytes, the active Great Toad, or beside a larger marsh-spirit boss so his Mandala of Cinders and Stillness actually matter.
