Fuzzlefangs — The Encounter

Bloated bile-toad of the trickster's poxed brood · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Fuzzlefangs

Whisper the trickster's name in the bogs and you summon his brood. Fuzzlefangs is counted among the bileblights, foul giant-kin said to be spat from the swollen guts of a chained deceiver as punishment runs septic through the marshes. Folk of the fen know the signs: cattle bloating overnight, wells gone green and bitter, the buzzing reek that rolls ahead of the thing before ever it is seen. It hoards scrap and rusted weaponry the way a midden hoards rot, lashing hammer-heads and crossbow bolts to its hide with stolen straps. It does not hunger so much as it spreads, treating every wound it takes as a seed, every burst boil as a gift to the land. Hunters who fell one report that the carcass keeps weeping long after death, and that nothing grows on the ground where its bile soaked through for seven seasons after. Burn the remains. Salt the pit. Do not bury it whole.

Bile Aura. Fuzzlefangs reeks of seeping pox. At the start of each of its turns, every creature within 5 feet of it that is not immune to poison takes 5 (1d10) poison damage. A creature that ends its turn within the aura must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned until the start of its next turn.

Distended Bulk. Fuzzlefangs has advantage on saving throws and ability checks made to avoid being knocked prone, grappled, or moved against its will. When it is reduced to half its hit points, its sloshing innards rupture (see When Bloodied in the sixty-second brief).

Actions

Multiattack. Fuzzlefangs makes one Bolt-Hammer attack and one Spike-Fist attack, or it makes two Spike-Fist attacks.

Bolt-Hammer. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d12 + 4) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Spike-Fist. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) poison damage.

Bile Spew (Recharge 5-6). Fuzzlefangs vomits a 15-foot cone of caustic bile. Each creature in the area must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. The ground in the area becomes difficult terrain coated in clinging slime until the end of Fuzzlefangs' next turn.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Bursting Boil. When a creature Fuzzlefangs can see hits it with a melee attack while it is within 5 feet, Fuzzlefangs can react to lance a swollen boil at the attacker, who must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or take 5 (1d10) poison damage and be blinded until the end of their next turn.

A mountain of jaundiced, wart-pocked flab waddling on splayed toad-feet, Fuzzlefangs jams a bolt-studded hammer-cannon over one shoulder while its other arm has bloated into a spiked club of solid pox; its tooth-crammed maw never closes, and a quiver of crude bolts rattles against its blistered back.

Pox-Kin (signature). Fuzzlefangs is immune to poison damage and the poisoned condition, and can move through Fuzzlefangs' Bile Aura and any bile-slimed terrain without penalty.

Actions

Gnashing Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) poison damage.

Reactions

Soak the Blow. When an ally within 5 feet takes damage, Fuzzlefangs can interpose its bloated bulk, taking half that damage in their place (the ally takes the other half).

A waist-high spawn-toad that trails its parent like a loyal hound, Fuzzlefangs gulps down the bile the big one spills so the warband can wade in safely behind it.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC13HP8d10+24 (68) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open by waddling into the densest cluster so Bile Aura ticks on as many bodies as possible, then ready Bile Spew for when they bunch up to heal. Kill-priority is anyone who tries to grapple or shove it off a ledge. At this tier run it as a mini-boss for one short fight, or pair it with a swarm of frogs/giant toads to swamp low-level PCs.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC15HP12d10+72 (138) To-hit+7Save DC15

Lead with the bog: drop Bile Spew on the clustered front line turn one, then wade in and let Bile Aura grind anyone who melees it. Bolt-Hammer the most mobile striker to knock them prone, then full-attack the prone target. Pairs naturally with a spellcasting hag, a marsh chieftain, or a horde of lesser giant-kin as the durable anvil that holds the line while the boss does the clever work.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP18d10+108 (207) To-hit+9Save DC17

At high level Fuzzlefangs is a fat damage-soak, not a closer; do not run it alone. Send it forward to anchor the front, recharge Bile Spew onto healers, and let Bursting Boil punish reckless melee. Pair it with a bigger threat such as a frost giant warlord or a fiend lieutenant, using its bile-slimed difficult terrain to cut the party in half so the real boss picks off the stragglers.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Fuzzlefangs?

Fuzzlefangs is built as a Challenge Rating 6 brute (2,300 XP) at its native tier 2, tuned for parties of levels 5-10. Scaled stat blocks are provided for tier 1 (levels 1-4) and tier 3 (levels 11-15) so you can drop it into almost any table without rebuilding it.

Can Fuzzlefangs be a companion or ally?

Not directly; it is a chaotic plague-beast, not a tameable mount. But the record includes a bound companion, Squirm, a pox-kin spawn-toad immune to poison who can wade through bile, soak blows for allies, and bite alongside the warband, giving you a smaller ally to field if you want the bileblight motif on your own side.

Is Fuzzlefangs a boss or an add-on?

It is an add-on, not a solo centerpiece. Fuzzlefangs lacks legendary actions and a full action-economy kit, so a four-PC party will out-act it on its own. Run it as the durable front-line anvil beside a smarter boss, a hag, a giant warlord, or a horde of lesser kin, where its Bile Aura and area denial shine.
